The tennis world has lost two of its brightest upcoming stars.
Sports Buzz Tennis player Jelena Dokic's dad is frickin' crazy. Aside from his recent arrest for threatening to launch a rocket attack on the Australian ambassador to Serbia, he has called a tournament official a Nazi, threw a fit over the U.S. Open's food and once told the press, “…there is no child that was not beaten by parents — the same with Jelena.”
Sports Buzz After beating the No. 1 player in the world yesterday, Murray is facing Federer today in the finals of the U.S. Open. Murray, a Scotsman, pulled off the year’s biggest tennis upset in his victory against Nadal, and has a 2-1 record against Federer. Update: He lost in straight sets.
He’s the hottest male tennis player, in multiple senses. With a Gold Medal at the Olympics and wins at the French Open and Wimbledon behind him, Nadal’s headed to New York soon for the U.S. Open. New York Magazine put him, topless, on the back of their current fashion issue.

Played on a badminton court with a wooden paddle and wiffleball, Pickleball was invented in 1965 with the whole family in mind. After remaining something of a novelty for many years, the game is rapidly growing in popularity as its “anyone can play” appeal strikes a chord. Sports Buzz After five sets and several rain delays, the 22 year old Spaniard beat five-time champion Roger Federer to win Wimbledon in one of the longest, most gripping games in the history of tennis. Unflappable John McEnroe was so visibly moved by the results that he offered Federer a hug live on air, which is like watching a grizzly bear shopping for tampons. You just don’t see that kind of thing happen every day.
Sports Buzz As the 2008 Wimbledon tennis tournament begins, authorities are looking into claims that gamblers fixed eight of last year’s matches. The growing tennis fixing scandal, which made news headlines late last year, has focused mostly on the Russian mafia paying off lower-ranked players to throw matches, so Scotland Yard is stepping in this year to try and combat fixing. So there’s more to Wimbledon than just white tennis shorts!
Sports Buzz Ana Ivanovic won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open becoming the new No. 1. Twenty year-old Ivanovic is the first Serbian to win the honor. In a sport in which so many all-star players vent their frustrations on the court, Ivanovic’s trademark smile and grace under pressure make her a breath of fresh air.
Sports Buzz 23-year-old divorcee tennis player Ashley Harkleroad appears in the August issue of Playboy. Harkleroad, ranked 61st with zero WTA titles, is the first professional tennis player to appear in Playboy. At least she can be first at something!
