18 Wild Celebrity Fails From This Past Year

Oh, the things I wish I could un-hear.

1. When Matty Healy made comments on The Adam Friedland Show that were gross, derogatory, and gratingly edge-lord-y.

The episode included the three men donning fake accents and mocking rapper Ice Spice, calling her “one of the Inuit Spice Girls," and Matty himself claiming that he watches porn of Black women being "brutalized." He initially called the backlash "deluded" but apologized for his "jokes" at various 1975 gigs that followed.  

2. When Matt Rife decided to screw over his fans by opening his show with a domestic violence joke.

TikTok-famous "comedian" Matt Rife claimed that his Netflix special was for the boys — which is perhaps why he chose to open it with a bit about a woman with a black eye, before launching into a stale, cliché rant about women and astrology. Throw in his non-apology where he linked to special needs helmets and every time that he talked about how blindingly handsome he is, and it's been quite the year for him. 

3. When...someone seemingly attempted to paint Sophie Turner as a negligent mother in the wake of her split from Joe Jonas.

Now, Joe has denied being behind any disparaging statements toward Sophie. But it would be foolish not to mention that there were a number of disparaging articles that portrayed Joe as a homebody and Sophie as a party-wild devil-woman. If the attempt was to sway public favor toward Joe, it did not work. 

4. When Gwyneth Paltrow described her intensely restrictive diet, featuring fasting and bone broth.

In Gwyneth's own words, her daily "wellness routine" includes one Paleo meal and a lot of liquids. "This is really restrictive eating," one dietician told BuzzFeed. Following criticism, Gwyneth claimed that her words were not supposed to be advice and not indicative of how she ate every day. 

5. When Rebel Wilson seemingly tried to claim that people only need "600 calories" a day.

"I learned that you really only need about 600 calories a day, you don’t need 1,500 or 2,000," Rebel said. She later claimed that reports stating that she was advocating for people to eat so little were "untrue," and the article was updated to say that she was referring to "detox" purposes only. That being said, one dietician told BuzzFeed, "I can't imagine a situation where anyone would need 600 calories."

6. When Jonah Hill's ex Sarah Brady revealed his alleged old text messages to her.

Yes, this included Jonah allegedly claiming that his "boundaries" for a romantic partner included them not "surfing with men," modeling, posting sexual photos, having "boundaryless inappropriate friendships with men," or having "friendships with women who are in unstable places” unless it’s limited to “getting a lunch or coffee or something respectful.”

7. When Dax Shepard was a nightmarish devil's advocate-type while interviewing Jonathan Van Ness.

In his interview with Jonathan, who came to be interviewed about their podcast, Dax spouted a bunch of anti-science, anti-trans nonsense until Jonathan cried. According to Jonathan, Dax was even worse in the unedited version. 

8. When Megan Fox decided to tag SAG-AFTRA in her strike-breaking Halloween Instagram post.

SAG-AFTRA essentially advised members not to dress as movie or television characters during the strike. Megan not only dressed up as a Kill Bill character alongside Machine Gun Kelly, but tagged SAG-AFTRA in the caption. "What a rebel. Keep posturing for stupid shit, pretty lady. Meanwhile we’ll be working 10 hours a day — unpaid — to get basic contract earners a fair deal," Lisa Ann Walter responded. 

9. When Drew Barrymore tried to resume her talk show amid the WGA strike — and then teared up over the criticism.

Drew was called out by the WGA itself for taping new episodes of The Drew Barrymore Show without its writers. "I've been through so many ups and downs in my life, and this is one of them. I deeply apologize to writers. I deeply apologize to unions," she said in an emotional video following criticism. The strike ended shortly after.

10. When someone tossed their mother's ashes at Pink during a concert.

To be clear, the celebrity is not the one failing here. It's also not Pink's fault someone handed her a wheel of cheese. Or any of the celebs who had phones chucked at them. 

11. When The Idol was released to the public.

Oh, where to begin with the HBO show helmed by The Weeknd and Sam Levinson. Its tumultuous making and alleged treatment of Amy Seimetz? The sheer misogyny of its ending? The fact that The Weeknd saying he wants his "fat tongue" on Lily-Rose Depp's character's "tight, little pussy" was televised? 

12. When Gwen Stefani said that she's Japanese.

Gwen gave a lengthy response — including the line, "I said, 'My God, I'm Japanese and I didn't know it.' I am, you know" — when asked about accusations of cultural appropriation during her Harajuku Girls era. 

13. When five people died on the Titan submersible and the stepson of one of the billionaires onboard kept tweeting about how he was going to a Blink-182 concert.

This might be stretching the definition of celebrity a bit, but yes, someone tweeted, "It might be distasteful being here, but my family would want me to be at the Blink-182 show as it's my favorite band and music helps me in difficult times" — while their family member was lost at sea.

14. When the Scandoval rocked the Vanderpump Rules universe.

Somehow, news breaking that Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval had split and that he was having an affair with Rachel “Raquel” Leviss feels like it happened last year. 

15. A retroactive fail: When the full extent of Justin Timberlake's alleged bad behavior was revealed via Britney Spears's memoir.

Britney's bestselling The Woman in Me included a story where Justin allegedly pressured Britney into getting an abortion and then played an acoustic guitar as she sobbed from the pain of the at-home abortion. Oh yeah, and she said he broke up with her over text.

16. When Amy Schumer posted a Martin Luther King Jr. clip while arguing against a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine, only to be told to read one of his books by MLK's daughter.
