January: Tide Pod Challenge

Let me start this by saying: Don't eat Tide Pods. Love yourself. Anyway, at the end of 2017 into the start of the 2018, the Tide Pod Challenge emerged. It saw people jokingly talk about wanting to eat the laundry detergent packs because of their bright colour and appetising appearance. Unfortunately some people actually did try their luck, but thankfully for most it was just one big ol' joke.

February: Change My Mind

The original image of the Change My Mind meme came from comedian Steven Crowder's Twitter. He went to a Christian university to ask people to convince him that male privilege was real. And well, what he got instead was a bunch of people photoshopping his photo and the ability to say he became a meme.

March: Tired SpongeBob

It's not a year without at least one new SpongeBob meme cropping up. In March, a total of three new memes were circulating: Krusty Krab Vs Chum Bucket, Evil Patrick and Tired SpongeBob. But the most popular of three was definitely Tired SpongeBob, who is used for situations that have you exhausted from doing the absolute least.

April: I Don't Feel So Good

Following the release of Avengers: Infinity War in cinemas, the I Don't Feel So Good meme was born. The meme follows the use of the disintegration effect that was shown at the end of the film. Once people figured out how to do the effect in Photoshop, the I Don't Feel So Good memes started popping up everywhere.

May: Is This A Pigeon?

Arguably one of the biggest memes this year has been Is This A Pigeon? The original image is from the series The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird, where a humanoid character confuses a butterfly for a pigeon. Today the photo is used to express confusion in relatable everyday situations which is why it's been so successful.

June: Ranked Lists

Look...June was a pretty slow month for memes, but Ranked Lists really shone the brightest. This meme followed the premise of pretending to defy the concept of ranking but ultimately ending the list with something that is actually better than the rest.

July: My Momma Said / 5-Year-Old Cardi

This viral image of 5-year-old Cardi B truly took over the internet in July. Also known as the My Momma Said meme, the image of a young Cardi always features alongside a sentence that reminds you of your tattle-telling ways from your childhood.

August: Life With MaK

August was a busy month in the meme-iverse. There was Lil Xan Kissing Noah Cyrus, Kim Kardashian's "Like Butter" tweet, Johny Johny Yes Papa and the iconic Life With MaK. Now, if the copyright holders of Johny Johny didn't take down every trace of the meme and video off the internet, it would've been Johny's month. But life doesn't work that way, so the extremely animated ASMR YouTuber, Life With MaK, wins the August title.

September: Moth Lamp

Jesus, the moth memes really just took over the web in September. The memes literally just revolved around the concept of moths loving light. And that's pretty much it. It all originated from a close-up photo of a moth from Reddit and, well, the rest is history.

October: Let's Get This Bread

The phrase "lets get this bread" was once originally used to express emotions about working hard to get money. Now it's snowballed into a heap of memes about literal bread. Welcome to the internet.

November: Surprised Pikachu

November saw the birth of the "thank u, next" meme, "not a cell phone in sight" and, the winner for the month, Surprised Pikachu. It’s basically just the most predictable outcome of a situation, paired with a photo of a surprised Pikachu. It's so simple that there's really no wonder why it took off the way it did.

December has been pretty dry on the meme front this year. While the month isn't over just yet, so far the meme that seems to be most popular is Sarah Paulson Shaking Her Head. People have matched different situations to a video of Sarah Paulson, you guessed it, shaking her head on the red carpet. Sorry to all those people who want to fuck the Grinch, you were just beat out.
