Fun Fact: Listerine was also frequently used as a contraceptive/abortifacient, so when you read those ads, keep in mind the not-so-hidden double entendre the copywriters were expressing.  They’re basically saying, “Single ladies, you need to shove some Listerine up your coochie when you have sex, or you’re gonna get pregnant and no man’s going to want to marry you.” (Not even making this up:   Isn’t that terrifying?! Listerine and LYSOL! And that nonsense didn’t even really work (except as much as dosing your uterus in chemicals makes it inhospitable to fetuses). Many old ads targeted at women are full of euphemisms. Like the one saying ladies need to take the product to “gain weight” to make guys like her — It’s not that men liked fat women in the past. What the ad really means is the supplement is supposed to make women’s boobs bigger (which IS a type of weight gain, technically).

Why don’t you listen to klezmer?! It’s awesome. Plus, I got my first klezmer mixtape from an orthodox dude (of the hippy dippy variety… similar to myself at the time).

OMFG THAT WAS AMAZING! I thought humans were not supposed to be able to make those sounds. Isn’t there something in the IMDB trivia about how the woman who originally sang for Plavalaguna made them do some of the notes digitally because she said it was impossible to sing them together like that?

Woah - that was AMAZING! And I’m not an Adam Lambert fan at all, but props to him, he was great here. (HUGE Cyndi fan — and of course she was amazing as usual). I hope they record this for real so people can buy it (and support the True Colors Fund too, of course!)

Maddux is being very naive here. Nepotism isn’t just about Jim Bob’s dad literally handing him the keys to the family dealership the day he turns 18. Lena Dunham’s parents *know* people — that is critical cultural currency, and something many of us don’t have. But, to become successful in a creative industry, knowing the right people is key, second only to actually having some talent. But the fact is, there are a lot of talented people who lack the drive or ability to get to know movers and shakers in their industry and therefore never get anywhere.  Dunham does have the advantage of having her parents already know some of the right people — people who know people who can make her own push to get to know the right people just a little bit easier. Don’t mistake me here: Dunham obviously has a lot of drive and talent, and she likely would have made it anyway, but I doubt she’d deny that who her parents are and who they know managed to ease and quicken her route to success.
