This Is How The Late-Night Hosts Reacted To The Shooting In Las Vegas

"Last night was the biggest mass shooting in United States history, that's a record that's been set twice in just the two and a half years that I've been living in America."

On Sunday night at least 59 people were killed and more than 500 were injured after Stephen Paddock opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas.

Trump responded to the shooting during a press conference on Monday morning, calling the attack, "an act of pure evil."

Then on Monday night, each late night host took a moment at the beginning of their show to address the Las Vegas shooting, and here's what they had to say.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

CBS

Colbert began the show by touching on the Las Vegas shooting saying that, "jokes aren't appropriate to address the shock and the grief and the anger we all feel." He brought up Trump's press conference from earlier in the day and agreed with Trump's words that this shooting was, "an act of pure evil."

He then began to challenge Trump, and asked him to do something to put an end to these mass shootings. He said that if Trump truly wanted to make America great again he should "do something the last two presidents haven’t been able to do: Pass any kind of common sense gun legislation that the vast majority of Americans want.”

Late Night With Seth Meyers

NBC

Meyers first offered his thoughts to the families of those injured and his thanks to those who risked their lives to save others during the aftermath of the shooting.

He then switched gears to address Congress saying, "If you're not willing to do anything [about gun violence], just be honest and tell us this is how it is... If it's going to be 'thoughts and prayers' from here on out, the least you can do is be honest about that."

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

Noah started his segment by giving his own context of America saying: "I've lived in the U.S., in New York, for two years now, and in that time there have been 20 mass shootings."

He then went on to describe the cyclical nature of these shootings. "I almost know how it's going to play out," Noah said. "We're shocked, we're sad, thoughts and prayers, and then, almost on cue, people are going to come out saying 'Whatever you do, when speaking about the shootings don't talk about guns.'"

The Late Late Show with James Corden

Corden started his monologue by highlighting the good parts of humanity that have been seen since the shooting, such as people who lined up all day to donate blood. He thanked those who gave selflessly and encouraged others to follow suit.

Then Corden's tone changed, and he took a moment to explain his own perspective. "Now I come from a place where we don't have shootings at this frequency, so it's hard for me to fathom, but it should be hard for everyone to fathom. Gun violence should not be a staple of American life," Corden said.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

ABC

Kimmel, who grew up in Las Vegas, gave an incredibly emotional tribute to those who died. "It's a kind of thing that makes you want to throw up or give up," he said. "It's too much to even process, all these devastated families, who now have to live with this pain forever, because one person with a violent and insane voice in his head managed to stockpile a collection of high-powered rifles and used them to shoot people."

He then addressed the 56 senators who, after the shooting in Orlando, voted against a bill that would fix a loophole which allowed consumers to purchase guns privately and without background checks. "With all due respect, your thoughts and your prayers are insufficient," Kimmel said.

Conan started by stating that he was not qualified to relay the facts of the shooting saying that there were people more equipped to talk about the how and the why, but that there was something he could speak on. He said, "I've been doing this job for more than 24 years, and when I began in 1993 occasions like this were extremely rare."

He then discussed his day leading up to his show. "Now today, when I came into work, my head writer was standing in my office with a sheaf of papers, and he said, 'Here are the remarks you made after the Sandy Hook shootings and the Pulse nightclub attacks in Orlando. You might want to look at them to see what you might want to say tonight.' And that, that struck me."
