My name is Alexandra Iacono and this is my story> I am a 28 year young female who loves animals and writing. The end. Just kidding! That would be boring if that were my whole story. BuzzFeed asks for a “description”. Whenever I see a website asking for a “description”, the first question that comes to mind is “a description of what?” What exactly do you want to know? A description are a sequence of events preceding the moments of this spiel. People don’t care I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Psychology with a Minor in Philosophy, in addition to a Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Don’t you hate that when people list their degrees? Like, who cares right? I also reside in Brooklyn, New York. So what? I will give you the abridged version of such events, hence the word “description”. As somebody who suffered from severe anxiety, writing was one of the biggest outlets for me. In school, I quickly learned there was a time and place for journaling. My professors helped me channel my love of extraneous detail into research. As a Forensic Psychology major, you see and read tons of horrific material. I would pop in a SpongeBob Squarepants DVD, ritualistically, so to not fall asleep with graphic images in my head. My anxiety only worsened when cases about non-human animal cruelty surfaced. I use the phrase “non-human animal” because humans often forget they are animals too. I digress. Upon reading about cases of cruelty, my blood boiled; I felt helpless. My emotions got the best of me and I lashed out. One of the professors told me “nobody will listen to a dramaqueen”. She was right. With my brain scattered, it was impossible to focus. Muay Thai, a martial art originating in Thailand, became an integral part of my routine. Life back at school did not get any easier. It was time to acquire a couple of new writing styles; persuasive and expository. What does that even mean?! Learning how to utilize facts, figures and logic to get my point across. I was devastated at the realization my opinions were obsolete. Training Muay Thai helped to get out of my comfort zone physically and mentally. If I wanted to make a change in a non-human animals’ life, emotions, fears and anxiety needed to be put on the side. To this day, I am a Non-Human Animal Advocate fighting for justice for our non-human animal brethren. When I saw the job posting for Junior Animal Staff Writer for BuzzFeed, I thought to myself “this is perfect!” My two biggest passions, non-human animals and writing, united! This is my story, my description.
