Selling Out
The grass is usually drier, dead or fake on the other side. Smiles, money shots and alleged happy endings come with a price. The guy working at Burger King covetously stares at a fellow stepping out of a limousine. Meanwhile, ten minutes prior to opening the limo door, Mr. Wall Street laments to his driver about the troubles money elicited.
When all that's left are your convictions and self-respect, money becomes obsolete. Most people will roll their eyes while thinking, "sticking to your convictions will not pay bills". You are right; respect will not pay the con-Edison bill or rent. However, it will allow a person to stand tall when hurdles become galling. If you shrivel up and succumb to the masses, failure will follow.
If you are constantly, with doubt, saying , "I'm doing the right thing" then something is not right. Asserting a situation is copacetic when clearly it is problematic, signifies denial. Don't settle out of desperation. Money makes us feel we need to "sell out" as a means of survival.
If you have a family to feed and just received the final eviction notice, your first thought is "who cares about selling out. I need money." As long as you keep your self-respect while doing what you need to do, honor remains in tact.
If you are a person who takes a job because of the glamour factor, avoid putting your doctrines aside. If a scholar adopts a sophomoric writing style, for a columnist position, then they've lost their voice to persuasion in the midst of commercial albatross. Never dumb yourself down at the command of a third party. If you choose to write, act and be a certain way, do it on your own terms. You are an autonomous being, remember that.
