I think there is a way to be tactful about a lot of these things without necessarily lying or making anyone look bad. Especially with things like the first one, ‘oh I thought you would look amazing in X for your birthday’

Fist question is wrong, plants respire all the time, a cursory google search can show you that not to mention science class at high school. It is just the fact that the rate of photosynthesis masks the respiration during the day.
