    7. Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park

    "In the beginning of 1996, I lost three relatives back to back, and it was my first experience with death and grief. I helped in the library at my school and one day, the librarian put this as the 'Featured Book' so I read it and it helped me understand the grieving process and that it’s okay to feel angry, sad, cheated, etc. The fact that it was about kids my own age made it relatable. I honestly can not recommend this book enough."

    "I actually didn’t remember it until I found it in a secondhand book store a few years ago, but Heckedy Peg. I saw the spine of it and gasped as everything came back to me. I used to read it ALL the time in first grade, and when the teacher would have students pick a book to be read to the class, it was always my choice. The illustrations are so beautiful and really set the tone for the reader."

The part I had to read out loud dealt with a moose and although the line read, 'moose burgers,' I said it out loud as, 'moose boogers.' Yeah...I love that book and I still crack up thinking about it."

    "I had every book in the series at one point and could finish them on a Saturday when I was in second grade. Each book focused on a group of four kids who thought the people at their school were various mythical creatures (ex: the teacher was a vampire, the cafeteria lady was Cupid, and the art teacher was an alien). I loved those books and passed them on to my nieces and nephew."
