18 Movies Perfect For Watching On Netflix Party With Your Friends While Socially Distancing

So — in case you're unaware — Google Chrome has an absolutely incredible extension called "Netflix Party," which allows subscribers to watch a show or movie at the same time as multiple friends AND have a live chat going.

And since we're all inside socially distancing*, I decided to take it upon myself to round up what I believe are the most fun films on Netflix to watch with friends while simultaneously group-chatting. I also divided them up by category for easy choosing! You're welcome:

CLASSIC COMEDIES

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Why it's perfect: It's the most quotable movie of all time and RIPE for some kind of virtual drinking game (for those of us 21+, of course). It's easy fun to have on in the background, but also rife with dumb jokes to take your mind off things. Also, UNPOPULAR OPINION: The Lancelot section is the best and most underrated part of the entire movie. "HA, HA!"

2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Why it's perfect: There are so many things to discuss in a group chat about this beloved '80s comedy. Like, how about that wild fan theory that Cameron and Ferris are the same person? Or how Ferris is the true villain of the movie and is kind of awful? Or the fact that there's an ACTUAL sausage king of Chicago?! So many topics!

3. The Other Guys (2010)

Why it's perfect: Listen, I know you're thinking, Why is this movie in the 'classic comedies' section? but hear me out: This movie is hilarious. That's it; that's my defense. It's so fun to watch in a group, especially while deciding which of your friends is which character (I'm a Michael Keaton through and through).

4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Why it's perfect: Why not use this time in quarantine to watch and/or rewatch the best Spider-Man film ever made (fight me)? You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll marvel (wocka wocka) at the incredible animation! The rewatchability of this one is through the roof, and it's sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Plus, you'll all get to debate which version of Spider-Man is the best and why it's definitely the Nic Cage one.

5. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Universal Pictures

Why it's perfect: This movie has everything! Bright colors, hilarious jokes, and Michael Cera at his most Michael Cera! Plus — similarly to Monty Python earlier on the list — this one is BEGGING for a virtual drinking game. DRINK EVERY TIME A VERY FAMOUS CELEBRITY APPEARS WHO WAS NOT AS FAMOUS AT THE TIME.

6. The Dark Knight (2008)

Why it's perfect: Um...do you need a reason? It's perfect? You can all chat about how Heath Ledger remains the best Joker (Joaquin was also great, but come on) or how the Bat Tank turning into the Batpod was the single coolest thing to ever happen in the history of forever. Also, like, you see Christian Bale shirtless a couple of times in this and it is A+.

MUST-SEE MUSICALS

7. Hairspray (2007)

New Line Cinema

Why it's perfect: This classic is absolute madness — thus a perfect distraction. It includes some dangerously catchy songs and great dance numbers, as well as Zac Efron at the peak of his High School Musical career. You love to see it!

8. Tarzan (1999)

Walt Disney Studios

Why it's perfect: Enjoy an underrated Disney soundtrack that had no business going as hard as it did, courtesy of Mr. Phil Collins. It's light fun with a really unnecessarily frightening beginning and dark death at the end! Also, Tarzan is BUILT...but why can't he grow a beard?! Discuss!

9. Sweeney Todd (2007)

Warner Bros.

Why it's perfect: This is Tim Burton's best film — do not @ me — and it's a visual feast for the eyes. It's also wild fun to watch with a group of people who don't like musicals, but do like horror films. It's surprisingly graphic AND really catchy. While ~some people's singing~ leaves something to be desired, that makes it all the more fun to comment on!

10. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)

Magnet Releasing

Why it's perfect: As an avid horror lover myself, I'm often turned off by the term "horror-comedy." However, this movie — alongside the obvious answer of Shaun of the Dead — is an exception. It's smart, funny as heck, and completely unexpected. If you've seen it, watch it again with people who haven't. If you haven't seen it...still watch it with people. It's a great group shock-watch.

11. Candyman (1992)

Why it's perfect: First, it's a classic. Second, what's more fun than the idea of being stuck inside, quarantined alone, and scared of every mirror you pass by? I'll answer that for you: NOTHING. Watch it before the new one comes out! BEE HIS VICTIM (get it? 'Cause bees? 'CAUSE BEES)!

12. Green Room (2015)

A24

Why it's perfect: This is one of those hidden gems on Netflix that you stumble upon at night while looking to be scared out of your mind. It has everything: Body horror! Punk rock! Patrick Stewart as a bad guy! You will scream out loud and then see a lot of "!!!" sent in the group chat.

RIGHTEOUS ROM-COMS

13. To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2019) AND To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020)

Why they're perfect: Okay, so I'm cheating and including these two together, but they make for a PERFECT double feature to have with your friends in a chat so y'all can talk about how Lara Jean should NOT have picked...who she picked...in the second film. YES, I WENT THERE. That's a super-fun argument to have with your closest loved ones, who are probably wrong!

14. Hitch (2005)

Why it's perfect: Are you kidding me?! This one's a classic in its own right! Chat about which of Hitch's (Will Smith) moves would and wouldn't work on you in the year 2020. Talk about how freakin' stunning Eva Mendes has always been! Talk about the mid-2000s fashion because OH, DEAR GOD.

15. Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Netflix

Why it's perfect: Ali Wong being hilarious! Randall Park being adorable! Keanu Reeves existing! This is the ULTIMATE feel-good rom-com, and an absolute delight to watch with others. Also, if I could have the "I Punched Keanu Reeves" song played at my funeral, that'd be great, thanks!

THRILLING THROWBACKS

16. Hook (1991)

Why it's perfect: Robin. Williams. That's it. That's the only convincing you need. Also, Dustin Hoffman giving us absolutely everything as Captain Hook. Pure dinner theater. Plus, the character of Rufio (Dante Basco) was one of my first legit crushes as a child, and his coolness has yet to be matched by anyone IRL, so maybe y'all can discuss that in the chat.

17. It Takes Two (1995)

Warner Bros.

Why it's perfect: Do you love The Parent Trap but hate the part where they're actually related and not just complete strangers who look identical? WELL, DO I HAVE A FILM FOR YOU. This is my personal favorite entry in the Mary-Kate and Ashley–verse, and it's a ball to watch with friends, if only to make fun of the incredibly ridiculous fake New York accents.

18. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

United Artists

Why it's perfect: A flying car! Dick Van Dyke at his sexiest (yeah, I said it)! This Grima Wormtongue–lookin' dude trying to steal people's children! It's a wild ride, PUN INTENDED, and a super-fun watch with multiple people, especially if you have friends who've never seen it. PS: I sincerely DARE you to find a song in any musical that slaps harder than "Me Ol' Bamboo" because, spoiler alert, you can't.
