People Shared The Horror Movies That Fully Traumatized Them And, Yeah, No Thank You

You can either love horror or you can sleep at night. YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH.

A while back, we asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to share a horror movie that they personally found so disturbing, it literally kept them up at night. These tales of terror sparked even MORE responses, so here are just a few more of the movies that made the ~cut~:

    1. Burnt Offerings (1976)

    United Artists

“It’s this movie from the late ’70s that no one’s ever heard of for some reason. It's basically about a family rents a large estate one summer and a whole lot of weirdness goes down. It will mess you up for life.”

    2. The Watcher in the Woods (1980)

    Buena Vista Distribution

"I couldn't look in any mirrors at night for many, MANY years afterward."

    3. Evil Dead (2013)

    TriStar Pictures

"This remake was so terrifying that I couldn’t finish watching it the first time. It took me a whole year to gather up the courage to try watching it again."

    4. The Hitcher (1986)

    TriStar Pictures

"It’s been way too long since I’ve seen this, but it still terrifies the crap out of me!"

    5. Last Shift (2014)

    Magnet Releasing

"I don’t get scared easily, but I watched this with all of the lights off and I nearly pooped my pants. I had nightmares for at least a week."

    6. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

    Continental Distributing

"My grandmother had 80 acres in the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin. I saw this movie when I was 5 or 6 years old and was terrified to sleep in that house at night because it seemed like the perfect setting for those zombies. It still creeps me out."

    7. Tusk (2014)

"I thought it sounded like a funny premise, but it kept me up the whole night and bothered me for weeks. I've watched a lot of horror movies. I don't know what it is about this one, but it absolutely haunted me."

    8. Child's Play (1988)

    MGM/UA Communications Co.

"I was nine and Chucky somehow reminded me of my American girl doll. I had to put her away in my closet every night so that she wouldn’t stare at me with her huge eyes and buck teeth trying to plot my death while I slept."

    9. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)

"A lot of people think the remake is just a dumb movie, but I’m a fully-grown adult and it’s been YEARS since I saw this and I STILL have a ridiculous fear that those little things are going to show up."

    10. Arachnophobia (1990)

    Buena Vista Pictures

"I watched this when I was a kid and I haven't had a worry free shower in 16 years."

    11. The Descent (2006)

    Pathé Distribution

"This is the most disturbing, gory, hopeless movie ever made. I legitimately wish I could erase it from my brain."

    12. Phantasm (1979)

    AVCO Embassy Pictures

"I saw it when I was about eight and — although I had already seen other horror movies because my parents were huge horror fans — this movie was the only one to give me nightmares. To this very day I get apprehensive around undertakers, especially if they are tall and wearing a dark suit."

    13. Hereditary (2018)

"I went and saw a late night showing of this with a friend, knowing absolutely nothing about the film. Then, when the trailers for new movies started playing and they were all scary movie trailers, I knew that we were in for a ride. We were terrified!"

    14. Hide and Seek (2005)

    20th Century Fox

"It's a movie with Dakota Fanning and Robert De Niro. I watched it when I was like 10 at a sleepover and couldn’t get it out of my head. I eventually had my friends mom call my mom at like 2 AM to pick me up and I slept in my parents bed the rest of the night. It truly messed me up."

    15. The Witch (2015)

"I watched this one night randomly at 3 AM because I couldn't sleep and I love witch movies. It scared the heck out of me! It reminded me of the movie The Village, but scarier. It seemed so real. I will never watch it again!"

    16. I Spit On Your Grave (1978)

    Cinemagic Pictures

"I can deal with a ton of violence and gore, but Lord, the sadism in that movie was off the charts."

    17. Sinister (2012)

    Summit Entertainment

"It really messed me up. The whole movie just goes through all of these horrible scenes of families being murdered in really creative and dark ways by this HORRIFIC looking thing. It gives me goosebumps even thinking about it."

    18. Grave Encounters (2011)

    Tribeca Film

"My cousin told my sister and I about it. I had just gotten into horror and I was loving it. Nothing really scared me. Then my sister and I saw this was coming on TV one night, so we stayed up to watch it. It came on at like 1 AM and we watched it, I literally jumped multiple times. We were so freaked out afterwards that my sister went straight to her room and left me in the dark corridor alone. Safe to say, I watched Cartoon Network until the sun came up. I only slept the next day while my mom and sister were home with me."

    19. The Babadook (2014)

    Entertainment One

"Hands down. No gore, just you being forced to use your own imagination. It'll make sure you keep the lights on while you're sleeping for about six months."

    20. Dead Silence (2007)

    Universal Pictures

"That movie messed me up for a solid month. I can’t even hear the name 'Mary Shaw' anymore."

    21. Mirrors (2008)

    20th Century Fox

"I went to see it in theaters with my best friend all the way back in middle school. The scene with the girl in the tub...well, let's just say that neither of us would look into a mirror for weeks. It really messed me up as a 13-year-old."

    22. V/H/S (2012)

    Magnet Releasing

"I haven’t brought myself to watch the sequels yet. All 'found footage'-type stuff is very creepy, but this one is especially terrifying."

    23. The Entity (1982)

    20th Century Fox

"If you haven't seen it, be thankful. I saw this when I was 10 and it is no less disturbing to me in my 40's. Most horror movies nowadays don't bother me, but maybe it's because this one desensitized me."

    24. The Others (2001)

    Warner Sogefilms

"The very first time I saw sent me down a rabbit hole for a few days. I couldn't think about anything else."

    25. Farm House (2008)

    IFA Distribution

"This one seriously traumatized me. It is like a bad acid trip."

    26. Funny Games (1997)

    Concorde-Castle Rock/Turner

"You can't make a list about movies that mess you up without mentioning this one. My friend and I watched the original German version. I thought I was going to throw up and made my friends turn it off."

    27. IT (1990)

    Warner Bros. Television Distribution

"The original miniseries. I watched it when I was in 4th grade with my mom. I was terrified of going near open drains for about a year, and I'm still terrified of spiders, to this day directly because of this."

    28. The Strangers (2008)

    Rogue Pictures

"This should definitely be on this list. I watched it back when it first came out and — to this day — I won’t answer the door if I’m home alone (unless I’ve ordered food, of course)."

    29. And finally, Creep (2014)

    The Orchard

"It's about the videographer who takes a job to help this guy record a film for his unborn son, since he has cancer and wanted to have something for his son to watch when he’s passed. Let me tell you NOTHING scares me, but this was so (for lack of a better word) CREEPY. Each scene gave me so much anxiety that I had to watch The Office afterwards to fall asleep."
