@pickle, it's because white culture aka light skin Europeans were the ones that created the notion when they colonized and tried to wash away other cultures and their uniqueness. Those same powers still shape us today and their ideals still stand.

This problem is prevalent all over the world. Africa, Asia, Latin America etc... as human beings we've been conditioned that lighter skin equals beauty. It's all leftover ideals from colonial times that have been ingrained in our psyche.
