Mothering Sunday in the UK had nothing to do with mothers until Mother’s Day became a holiday in the US. It was traditionally the day when people would return to their ‘mother’ church - the church where they were baptised and attended until they had to leave to find work. Employers would let servants have the day off so they could go home, but although it had a social aspect because of that, it was never a day to honour mothers. The first Father’s day commemoration took place in a city not far from where Mother’s Day originated. Mother’s Day started in Grafton, WV, and Father’s Day in Fairmont WV.
