I found more of an appreciation for Romeo and Juliet after reading Tony Tanner's essay on how it would be perceived differently by a Renaissance audience. It, like Hamlet, carries a lot more historical and cultural baggage today.
Having read through a lot more Amazon reviews than I should have, it seems to me that most of the one-star reviews of Hamlet seem to be disgruntled high school students or people who simply don't "get it" and want to blow off steam.
