I’ve come across men who don’t get this whole thing because they’d be thrilled if a woman came up to them and complimented them etc. And hey, maybe it would be nice if we could all just compliment each other innocently. Thing is, those guys would love it if someone said something about the way they look because it would be out of the blue. It gets a bit tiresome when you get judged on your appearance all the time. Also, because most women have had an experience where that ‘compliment’ turned nasty, or they at least know someone for whom it did, a guy saying something like this to you always puts you on your guard. Add to this the fact it starts as soon as you hit puberty, and it always makes you unsettled. When you’re a child and grown men are leering at you, that’s scary (first time I was catcalled, I was 12). Being flat-chested and usually wearing boyish clothes, you’d think there wouldn’t be much for men to comment on but no! I get variations on ‘give us a smile’ all the time, which is one I really don’t get. They don’t walk around the streets grinning, so why do they expect me to?
