This is what I wrote 3yrs ago “I’m feeling a little emotional today. Yesterday was the final day of the Olympics and as well as enjoying the awe inspiring achievements on the sporting field of play, I wanted to take a moment to reflect a bit. These Games have been a romance story for me. I moved toLondonone month beforeLondonwon the bid. 2 ½ years later, I fell into a job working on them. Working on the Games in this city helped me learn so much about the place I had made my new home; it exposed me to the culture that it offers, the sports clubs where Olympians of the future will come from and London’s hidden gems. The years that I’ve done this have been pure romance and helped me fall in love with this city several times a day, particularly over the last few weeks. It’s been the little things, the fact that people are smiling a bit more, the pride in people’s eyes, watching Londoners happily stop and help a tourist with directions. The “other” heroes in red and purple coming into London with me on the first train into London every morning (arriving 0535!), the train station worker shouting to those volunteers “You deserve a Gold medal!”, the 4.2 million people that came and cheered on the Torch in London, Denise Lewis’ arse, the “we’re gonna be on a stamp!”, the Mo-bot, the spontaneous “all you need is love”. I’m so proud ofLondon. The thousands of people of who have worked on the Games, from Danny Boyle to the road sweeper. Each and every one of them contributed to showing the world that we might moan and but this is an amazing city, that can accomplish amazing things. We’ve shown the world a new modern London that has so many faces and enjoys having fun without a stiff upper lip in sight.”
Response to 18 Times John Oliver Nailed It:
Oh i’ve been loving him since his first appearance on Mock the Week, through the Daily Show and The Bugle years and his own show is now so great (although I do occasionally expect Andy Zaltzman to pop up and do a pun run). The only downside is because of this show’s success The Bugle is going monthly. So in summary America. ..you are welcome ;-)
