29 European Holidays That You Should Add To Your Bucket List

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us the most underrated holiday spots in Europe. Here are the places you shouldn’t miss.

1. Paleokastritsa, Corfu

The north of Corfu is amazing. Most people head to the south of the island for the party scene and the heat, but the most beautiful views are up top, near Kassiopi and Paleokastritsa. It's a little less crowded, just as warm, and has some of the most turquoise seas i've ever seen. I'd get a room near Paleokastritsa (the most beautiful spot), then rent a car so you can explore the rest of the island.

Hotels were expensive so we went with another couple, rented a house near the beach and it worked out at £60 each. Super quiet, friendly, and pretty. Plus the Charlottenlund beach front was a lovely place to relax and go for a nippy swim!

3. Genoa, Italy

It's moody and atmospheric with tall, old buildings and narrow, winding streets. It's a great place to wander and get lost. Everywhere you go you can hear the clatter of plates and cutlery from families eating in their small apartments, shouting, laughing, fighting. At night we heard a lot of impressive snoring. The city is famous for it's delicious focaccia, and there are amazing focaccerias all over the place. At about 6pm, the older residents don their smart outfits and head out into the sunset for "la passeggiata" – basically a walk about town. Then they have a drink in the bars.

4. Blekinge, Sweden

It's far less crowded than Stockholm and so pretty and tranquil. My favorites are between Karlshamn and Karlskrona: The drive between them takes one hour and the nature is breathtaking with forests, ocean, coast, fields, mountains, and streams. Plus cute little houses. In Karlshamn there's an ice cream parlour on a boat and in Karlskrona there's an ice cream parlour in an renovated double decker bus. Plus Karlskrona has a small island in the middle of centrum thats great for picnicking with a gorgeous view!

5. Warsaw, Poland

It's a lot quieter than most European tourist destinations, but it's definitely worth visiting if you're interested in history. The uprising museum is incredibly well done, as is the Jewish museum. The rebuilt old town is pretty and worth a visit. It's incredibly cheap, and has a similar food and bar scene as Berlin but at a fraction of the price. You can get to Krakow in under 3 hours on the train which is a much bigger town with more tourist stuff to do, so it's definitely worth combining the two if you have the time.

6. Salcombe, England

It’s a bit on the pricey side but the weather is always amazing and the two regatta weeks in August are great for all the family, plus, it’s like the Mediterranean in England, with crystal clear blue water and golden sandy beaches.

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Fantastic food. Fantastic drinking. Fantastic weather and still reasonably priced. Close enough to beaches and the city is small enough to traverse on foot. A real two in one holiday.

8. Bremen, Germany

It has the most amazing park with a gigantic rowing lake, a rare breed sanctuary, and a gorgeous cafe where you can sit and drink Aperol Spritz. You can climb to the top of the cathedral spire for a great view of the city, and Bremen is where they brew Becks beer, so you can do a fun brewery tour too. Also, Hamburg is only a short (55 min) train ride away if you want to knock a second picturesque German city off your "to visit" list at the same time.

9. Batumi, Georgia

Damn, it is beautiful there. It's not overcrowded and the food and beach are awesome. Also, compared with other European countries, it is dirt cheap and most people speak at least one foreign language, like English or Russian.

10. Zagreb, Croatia

It's the arty capital of Croatia with so many cool bars and museums. Check out the museum of broken relationships to start and then duck into a beer garden to cool off.

It's the perfect blend of old and new. Go on a tour of the vaults (I recommend the Mercat tours ghost walks), do an open top bus ride and definitely go to Camera Obscura near the castle. It was so much fun!

12. Kotor, Montenegro

The bay of Kotor is beautiful, with little villages built by the Venetians to provide safe harbour to their ships and a city with medieval walls which stretch right up into the mountains. Basically undeveloped while it was Yugoslavia, it's all about to change — so get there before it becomes like Dubrovnik, which is just further up the coast over the Croatian border.

13. Valetta, Malta

I went to Malta last September and haven’t stopped dreaming of it since. It’s gorgeous. It's Arabic and Mediterranean in history and you can tell from the buildings and food. It’s super cheap and their main language is actually English. Bonus for any Game of Thrones fans: Mdina and the azure window on Gozo were used as locations for season 1!

A super cool arty city with so much history. Though its small, you won't get bored — and if you do, then hop over to Lake Bled for a swim.

There are lots of old, little spa hotels with loads of warm water and cold water pools and different saunas. The landscape is open and has loads of coast and water, beautiful forests, and lots of historical places like Prora, from the old east Germany. It has a good mixture of everything but if you're a history buff or like spas I highly recommend it!

It's a beautiful unique small city with loads of history and all around greatness. I’m thankful every single day that I moved here and it’s really growing as a touristic hotspot!

Dublin is full of culture and fun, there’s beautiful scenery on the west coast and a highway that goes through it: It makes for a perfect road trip! People are friendly and the transport options are endless!

It has a very Italian vibe, but it's way cheaper than Italy. It even has a Colosseum! And it has about a third of the number of tourists that you would encounter in Rome. It also has some other ruins and beautiful shingle beaches with clear blue waters.

Quaint villages with old town centres full of half-timber houses, old churches, a river countryside, vineyards and wineries, hiking paths through nature with fantastic views and of course lots of medieval castles and ruins like Marksburg, Rheinfels, and Pfalzgrafenstein.

20. Gothenburg, Sweden

Its coast and islands have a good ferry service, a big amusement park, a science center, and good shopping. The old Haga is gorgeous and has cinnamon buns the size of plates and chocolate balls as big as your fist. Ferries, busses, and trams are easy to maneuver and the city is suitable for walking. There's a big botanical garden and a nature museum with a stuffed whale. It has lots of coffee shops and you will need to have fika at least once or twice everyday.

21. Nantes, France

It's a middle-sized French town just below Brittany, with stunning architecture. It's full of trees and flowers and also is very interesting culturally: I reckon Le Lieu Unique may be the only place in the world which is a cafe, a bar, an art gallery, a restaurant, a gig venue, a sauna, and a bookshop at the same time. Trentemoult across the river is absolutely lovely, and it's less than an hour's drive from the beach. There's also lots of great food and wine.

22. Bergen, Norway

This place is legit the most beautiful city I've ever been to. If you're short on cash, you can climb mountains and go on the most gorgeous walks for free. But if you have some money to spend, going on a fjord cruise is really worth it. The nature is breathtaking (there are waterfalls everywhere you look), and if you're feeling brave you should climb the Stoltzekleiven staircase.

It’s a small Italian fishing town on the other side of Naples bay to, you guessed it, Naples. Amazing views 24 hours a day (coming from someone who normally doesn’t care for views). Awesome food. I mean… authentic Italian pizza. It’s also just a short train ride away from Pompeii and Herculaneum. I would 100% recommend going to both. Eerie, well preserved and beautiful. I absolutely love it there!

26. The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

For any adventure/ocean lovers and families, the west of Ireland really is the place to go! The Wild Atlantic Way is a drive that takes you along the whole west coast and along the way there is stuff for every age to do! 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

It's very quiet. Like eerily so. So many perfect sandy beaches. Amazing food. Very cheap accommodation, even if the flights are a little pricier than most places. There isn't much to do here, but if you like lying on a perfect beach and swimming in perfect calm crystal clear sea and then eating amazing prawns it's the best.

28. Mývatn, Iceland

If you go to Iceland, it's really worth renting a car and driving around the island because there's so much to see outside of Reykjavik. My favourite place was Mývatn, which is in the north of Iceland near Akureyri. The geothermal baths are amazing, and parts of the scenery genuinely make you feel like you're on the moon. It's well worth a visit.

It’s a lovely little village set in beautiful mountains. It’s also close to Cannes and approximately an hour's drive to Provence and Grasse.
