James Corden Is Facing Backlash After Getting A Golden Globe Nomination For His "Offensive" Portrayal Of A Gay Man

    Interesting choice, Golden Globes.

The 2021 Golden Globe nominations just came out, and they're being met with fierce backlash online.

There were some shocking snubs (where the fuck was I May Destroy You, one of the most acclaimed shows of the year???) as well as some questionable inclusions. Suffice it to say, people are pissed.

One of the most controversial nominations of the day went to James Corden for his role in the Netflix musical The Prom.

Corden plays a gay character in the film, and his performance was heavily criticized by members of the LGBTQ+ community, with many deeming it "stereotypical" and "offensive."

The unrepentant violence that is James Corden doing a homophobic portrayal of a gay man in a musical about gay rights.

James, a straight man, put on some cartoonishly effeminate mannerisms and a "gay accent" for the film. Many wondered why his role couldn't have gone to a gay actor.

Setting aside personal views on James Corden, one of the biggest problems of hiring a straight actor to play a gay role is that their interpretation of what 'gay' means will so often be stereotypical and problematic. At least if it's a gay actor that's less of a problem.

So... we couldn't get a gay man to play James Corden's role in #TheProm ? They were all too busy? Do we still think it's kosher to have non-LGBTQIA people playing aggressively flamboyant, stereotypical gay characters? Does anyone ever learn? LMK.

Well, James now has a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination for that performance, and the backlash was immediate.

James Corden's Golden Globe nomination for The Prom is a hate crime.

James Corden getting a Golden Globe nomination for his offensive and mediocre performance in The Prom... it’s giving Aluminum Globes

James Corden in the prom pushed the gay rights movement back by a few decades and he got nominated for a golden globe

People really want to know WTF is going on over at the Golden Globes:

ur telling me james “doing a vague impression of a gay person circa 1990” corden was nominated for a golden globe for THAT?

Gay people are once again pointing out how ridiculous Corden's performance was:

James Corden got nominated for acting that gay for like an hour. I’ve done it for three decades and have nothing to show for it but body dysmorphia and some Chromatica Oreos.

James Corden acts gay for two hours and gets a Golden Globe nomination, I act straight for 23 years and all I get is trauma

So #JamesCorden has just been nominated for Best Actor at the #GoldenGlobes

And many questioned how James Corden got a nomination for The Prom while his costar, Meryl Streep, received nothing:

golden globe awards be like meryl streep james corden

james corden getting nominated for a golden globe but not meryl streep for the prom, thats why they call it the comedy category!

James has yet to respond to the backlash, but we'll update you if he does.
