    1. Midsommar (2019)


    What it's about: "A couple travels to Sweden to visit a rural hometown's fabled midsummer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult."

    Why you should watch it: "I watched it about a week ago, and it still runs through my mind. The torture scenes were a lot to watch, and during some parts I had to turn down the volume and close my eyes."


    2. Tusk (2014)


    What it's about: "A brash and arrogant podcaster gets more than he bargained for when he travels to Canada to interview a mysterious recluse who has a rather disturbing fondness for walruses."

    Why you should watch it: "It just kept getting more twisted and terrifying in such a low-key way. It still haunts me now."


    3. Martyrs (2008)

    Wild Bunch

    What it's about: "A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity."

    Why you should watch it: "It was absolute torture to watch. I love horror films, but this was brutal, unpleasant, and had no payoff at the end. I made myself watch Frozen afterwards to clear my head from the atrocities I had seen in that film."


    4. Uncut Gems (2019)


    What it's about: "With his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive."

    Why you should watch it: "It's not disturbing in the traditional sense, but wowwww, it's a tough one to watch. The end literally gutted me for weeks."


    5. Nocturnal Animals (2016)

    What it's about: "A wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale."

    Why you should watch it: "The beginning of it cut right through me. There's one particular scene with the family on a highway that will stick with you forever, even more than the ones from Funny Games, Hereditary, and Midsommar."

    What it's about: "A young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh."

    Why you should watch it: "It's a French film about a young vegetarian who slowly realizes she’s turning into a cannibal. The silence and the gore of the movie still terrify me to this day."

    What it's about: "Two violent young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic 'games' with one another for their own amusement."

    Why you should watch it: "The movie was so messed up that I couldn't finish watching it. To this day, I still haven't. And in case you're curious, there's a basically shot-for-shot remake that was made a decade later (with Tim Roth and Naomi Watts) that's equally disturbing."

    What it's about: "A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants."

    Why you should watch it: "I watched it once, and it played on my mind for weeks. It was absolutely chilling, mainly because the antagonists did everything just for fun."


    9. The Green Inferno (2013)

    What it's about: "A group of student activists travel to the Amazon to save the rainforest and soon discover that they are not alone and that no good deed goes unpunished."

    Why you should watch it: "It actually made me feel sick to my stomach."


    10. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

    What it's about: "A father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the body of a young woman, who was apparently harboring dark secrets."

    Why you should watch it: "It left me feeling messed up for weeks. The movie literally gave me chills."

    What it's about: "Four children try to hold things together and play a family in their isolated prefab house after the death of their parents. As they begin to deteriorate mentally, they hide their mom's festering corpse in a makeshift concrete sarcophagus."

    Why you should watch it: "To say it's disturbing is an understatement. I watched it in film studies and spent most of the time looking away from the screen."

    Why you should watch it: "It's one of the most graphic movies I've ever seen. I'll just leave it at that."

    Why you should watch it: "So much weird shit goes down in this movie, and it made me crawl out of my skin at certain points. I couldn't look away."


    15. The Last House on the Left (1972)

    What it's about: "Two teenage girls head to a rock concert for one's birthday. While trying to score marijuana in the city, they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychotic convicts."

    Why you should watch it: "This is the original movie by Wes Craven. I had to turn this one off halfway through, and I will not watch it again."


    16. Honeymoon (2014)

    What it's about: "A newlywed couple finds their lake-country honeymoon descend into chaos after Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night."

    Why you should watch it: "It was so disturbing that I had to turn it off, which is strange for me because I love horror movies. It screwed me up so badly that I can’t even listen to a certain song anymore because it reminds me of the movie. I cringe just thinking about it."

    What it's about: "A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig is a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession."

    Why you should watch it: "It’s a Spanish movie with Antonio Banderas. I watched it five years ago and still think about it often because it freaked me out so much."

    What it's about: "A corporate defense attorney takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution."

    Why you should watch it: "It's not disturbing in a horror movie kind of way, but it's extremely creepy because of how real the movie is (it's based on a true story, after all). It's simply frightening because it all really happened."

    Why you should watch it: "It left me feeling empty and desolated. It required a serious palate cleanser."

    Why you should watch it: "This is a remake from the '70s movie of the same name. There's a scene with Olga where she's stuck in her room, and it made me feel absolutely sick. I had to cover my eyes. The noises alone were devastating. Tilda Swinton was stellar."

    Why you should watch it: "This movie has stayed with me for almost 30 years. There were jump scares that haunted me then, and they still haunt me now. It's truly triggering."

    What it's about: "An erotic novelist is writing a morbid story of a family destroyed by incest, murder, and abuse. Her assistant sets outs on a mission to uncover the reality of this story, but the reality might be too much to bear."

    Why you should watch it: "It's the creepiest, wildest, grossest movie I have ever seen. It made me so uncomfortable. The plot twist at the end is also brilliant. The movie is so freaky that I'm never going to watch it again."


    26. And We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

    What it's about: "Kevin's mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly dangerous things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined."

    Why you should watch it: "This movie is painful and frustrating in a way that I'll never forget. The final scenes replayed in my mind for days."
