On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, GoT creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss shared how the popular series came to be. Benioff [left] said, "First we had to convince George to let us use the books. ... We took him out for lunch here in LA at the Palm, and we had a four-hour lunch. And at the very end of lunch, he was sitting there looking between the two of us and he said, 'Who is Jon Snow's mother?' And it was a test question."
Weiss continued, "Weirdly, we had both talked about it because we had read the book again by that point. And when you read it a second time, and if you're paying attention, you can kind of tell who Jon Snow's mother is. So, we had an answer that we thought was right ... and it turned out to be the right answer." — youtube.com
