Sex Education has drawn to close after four years 😢. The unique series gave us so many amazing characters, so we thought we'd round them all up to show everyone in the first ever episode and the last...

1. Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn

Netflix

Otis is our protagonist, and he starts life as quite an anxious and confused little thing! Though he’s wise beyond his years, it takes a little life experience and some exciting new relationships to really bring Otis out of his shell. By the end of season four, he’s a more well-rounded human capable to letting things go in ways he never was before! That’s growth right there.

2. Ncuti Gatwa as Eric Effiong

Netflix

Arguably the best character on the show, Eric goes from bubbling with self-doubt to glowing with pride and power. His arc across the whole four seasons is totally inspiring, but throughout his whole journey, he’s never without a smile or a smart remark to defend someone’s honour or drag the haters. And that’s why he’s my fav.

3. Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley

Netflix

Maeve begins her Sex Education life as quite the closed-off individual with a lot of hate and resentment towards the world (understandably). She also has next to no self belief despite her many talents. By the end of the show, Maeve has loved and lost and found her voice. She stands up for herself countless times and finds a family that she finally be herself with <3.

4. Mimi Keene as Ruby Matthews

Ruby was really just a mean girl in the first few episodes of series one, but her character development across the show is really top tier. Beneath the bitchy exterior, Ruby has shown she has immense heart, she’s just been burned by life several times. Season four Ruby is a whole other person though – kinder, stronger, and better than ever!

5. Connor Swindells as Adam Groff

Perhaps the character who goes through the most stark change is Adam. He starts off as a prick, quite frankly; incapable of being serious, chronically mean, and totally repressed. But even by the middle of the series he’s completely different. His relationship with Eric allows him to be more vulnerable, so by season four, he’s ready to repair his strained relationship with his dad, which is so lovely to see.

6. Aimee Lou Wood as Aimee Gibbs

Netflix

Aimee is a sweetheart from day dot of Sex Education, but she has a lot to learn – not only about other people, but herself, too. Aimee goes through A LOT, but it only serves to make her stronger, smarter, and more confident in what she wants and needs. Even though Aimee never loses her sweetness or no-filter charm, she’s a badder bitch by the finale, for sure.

7. Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson Marchetti

We first meet Jackson when he’s sitting atop the social food chain as Moordale’s head boy. An ocean of feelings and latent insecurities lie behind his jock-y exterior, and throughout the series, Jackson jumps into those hidden depths and figures out his shit in the most admirable of ways. He forms this amazing friendship with Viv, and becomes an all-round better person after facing his trauma head-on.

8. Alistair Petrie as Michael Groff

Netflix

Mr. Groff starts off as a sort of fearsome overlord at Moordale. He makes numerous mistakes and poor decisions as a teacher, a parent, and a husband. By season three/season four, he’s starting to see why and how he should work on himself, and he commits to it. His hug with Adam in the finale is the culmination of a lot of self reflection, and it’s so amazing to see.

9. Samantha Spiro as Maureen Groff

Netflix

Yes, Maureen is in Sex Education from the very first episode, and she also goes on quite a journey. She begins as quite a mousey woman, afraid to stand up to her husband, console her son, or even own her sexuality. Through her friendship with Jean and her separation from Michael, Maureen learns to feel empowered. It's an inspiring journey that proves it's never too late to go after what makes you happy.

10. Gillian Anderson as Jean Milburn

Netflix

Who could forgot Jean? She really goes through it this final season! Although she’s a competent woman with one of the most beautiful houses I’ve ever seen, Jean still has a lot to learn about life at the start of the show. Despite her commitment issues in season one, she finds love with Jakob. When that doesn’t work out, she doesn’t give up. Jean finds a way to be the best mum to Otis and Joy, and maintain her gorgeous house... Somehow. Go Jean!!
