36 Films That Are Almost Guaranteed To Make You Cry

"I think I cry every time I see a bee for about a year after each time of watching it!"

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us what film they love to cry to and there were so many suggestions that we've made two posts (here is the first one). These are some of their answers:

    1. Brokeback Mountain

    Focus Features

"Just thinking about their love for each other and how they aren’t able to be together makes me cry."

    2. About Time

    Universal Pictures

"About Time, for sure. It’s a cathartic sadness."

"It's such a beautiful and funny film, and the characters are so warm. I could cry all the way through, but it's the ping pong scene towards the end that always gets me."

"It’s such a beautiful story of love and family – I cry at their wedding and the dad's funeral every time. It makes you truly want to cherish the time you have with the ones you love. Very underrated movie but it’s a poetic masterpiece. Who knew that Domhnall Gleason and Rachel McAdams would be perfect together."

"I watched this in a packed theatre and had an emotional breakdown with strangers on either side of me."

"I'm not gonna lie, I've watched this movie over ten times and I cried every single time. It's a really good movie with a beautiful message."

"About Time is such a gorgeous film with the father-son relationship being equally important as the romantic relationship. So touching, so bittersweet. Tears every time."

"When he realises he won’t be able to see his dad anymore and has one more day with him. Then when he goes back to not save his sister so that he doesn’t wipe out his red haired daughter’s existence. He clearly loves them all so much. It’s so beautiful."

    3. Hook

    TriStar Pictures

"At the end when Tootles flies back to Neverland. I was five the first time I saw it and I'm thirty-three now – still gets me!"

    4. Billy Elliot

    Universal Pictures

"I start crying around the time his dance teacher reads the letter from his mum and I don't stop until the end credits. It's a bittersweet film but seeing Billy on the stage at the end makes everything feel worth it."

    5. Moonlight

"It's so emotional and so utterly beautiful!"

    6. The Good Dinosaur

"The Good Dinosaur made me bawl as a pre-teen and still makes me cry now."

    7. The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

    Warner Bros Pictures

"When Thorin apologises to Bilbo and Bilbo says goodbye to the company."

    8. Klaus

"It’s absolutely beautiful, with a great score, wonderful animation, and heartwarming story, but the ending is a bittersweet one, and the very last line is a punch in the heart."

    9. Instant Family

    Paramount Pictures

"Gets me every time when they are doing the adoption in the family court at the end. For anyone who comes from a broken home, that gives you all kinds of emotions. I cry every time I watch it."

    10. The Fox and the Hound

    Walt Disney Productions

"The part when the old lady puts Todd into the woods to make sure her neighbour doesn’t shoot him makes me cry every time."

    11. Gladiator

    DreamWorks Pictures

"It's a downright gruesome film, but the ending is beautifully emotional. I went into that movie expecting a typical over-the-top war film, but left crying my eyes out. Sometimes I still watch the ending just because it's literally THE BEST."

    12. The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I’m not 100% sure why, but it’s just such a good cry movie."

"The scene when Carmen calls her dad after running away gets me every time."

    13. Titanic

    Paramount Pictures

"I just think it’s one of the best movies ever. Even though it is a sad ending, it’s still a good cry if that makes sense. It’s so devastatingly beautiful. But the final scene where we see Rose in the Titanic meeting up with Jack in what I guess is the afterlife, is just beautiful. Especially if you do it like me where you play 'Fine Line' by Harry Styles over the last few minutes – it just hits different."

    14. Forrest Gump

    Paramount Pictures

"I cannot watch that movie without crying. I have happy tears and sad tears when watching it. It is definitely one of the best movies of all time."

    15. Clouds

"I never cry while watching movies (like ever) but Clouds on Disney+ made me BAWL like a baby. Definitely recommend."

"Even the trailer makes me tear up but that movie is absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful. It always reminds me to not wait for tomorrow to chase my dreams. I ugly cry every time I see it but it's worth it. He left such a beautiful legacy behind."

    16. The Notebook

    New Line Cinema

    "Gets me every time."

    17. Moana

    Walt Disney

"Any scene with her grandmother makes me bawl. This movie also has best cinematic moment of all time – when Moana returns the heart to Te Fiti and sings that incredible song about knowing who you are. Instant flood of tears!"

    18. Kramer Vs Kramer

    Columbia Pictures

"I kind of like to revisit Kramer vs Kramer every now and then. It gets everything going."

    19. The Time Traveler's Wife

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"It tears my heart out every time! If you want to cry even harder, read the book."

    20. Call Me By Your Name

    Sony Pictures Classics

"The cinematography and the music is elite and the performances in it are top tier. I think it’s such a good adaptation of the book (one of my favourites) and it’s one of the few stories that I feel in my heart. I have such a strong connection with the characters and the film feels like home to me."

"The father's speech near the end punches me in the gut and then that final static shot of Elio's face looking into the fire and cycling through every possible human emotion just kicks me when I'm already down."

    21. Love, Simon

    20th Century Studios

"The part where his mum is comforting him is like she’s comforting me too."

"It’s not necessarily sad, it’s just a beautiful movie about love and acceptance. My favourite scene is when Simon's mum comforts him after he comes out."

    22. Coco

"It came out about two months before I was going overseas and away from my son for a whole year and when Hector sings 'Remember Me' to Coco I burst into tears. I'm immediately brought back to how I felt in that moment in the movie theatre every single time I watch it even though I've been back with my son for two years now."

"The message that your loved ones, even when they’re physically gone, are still with you on every step of the way is beautiful and moving every single time."

"There are just so many emotions I go through, but the clincher is when Hector is singing to his daughter. He was saying goodbye to her, neither of them knowing it would be the last. My entire Spanish class broke into tears to some degree during that scene."

    23. P.S. I Love You

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"It might not be a 'masterpiece' or anything but it hits me in the feels. Every. Damn. Time."

"When Holly is dreaming of Gerry holding her in her sleep, and when she has her breakdown speech about being all alone after Gerry’s death, to all the sweet letters and surprises Gerry leaves her to help her move all breaks my heart and somehow fills me with love all at the same time. It sends my emotions into overdrive to just cry it out – plus Gerard Butler is gorgeous enough to shed a tear over!"

    24. My Girl

    Columbia Pictures

"Everytime. I don’t even have to watch the whole film sometimes, just the end."

"If you can get through it without crying, you have no soul."

"I think I cry every time I see a bee for about a year after each time of watching it!"

    25. JUNO

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

"It's such a great fun film but that ending always gets me. 'How do I look?' 'Like a mother – scared shitless.' Perfect happy/sad cry film."

    26. Me Before You

    Warner Bros Pictures

    "The ending is just...I can't:"

    27. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

    DreamWorks Animation

"The scene where he's in a train carriage and it's snowing but in his tired mind he sees his family running through the grassy plains and Bryan Adams sings 'Sound The Bugle' – even hearing that song makes me cry."

    28. Interstellar

    Warner Bros Pictures

"When Cooper is viewing his twenty plus years of messages from Earth and starts ugly crying, I start ugly crying. The sheer amount of raw emotion from Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain makes me feel so many things. The ending also makes me ugly cry. When Cooper finally reunites with Murph and all the animosity she had for him leaving is finally completely gone, I can’t keep a dry eye even if I wanted to."

"Interstellar is such a good movie for a happy cry. You go through all the emotions and then at the end when things are all figured out you just sob and realise 'wow we made it!' Love that movie!"

    29. Bridges Of Madison County

    Warner Bros Pictures

"It's a VERY underrated movie. Never fails to make me cry; the last ten minutes from when she almost gets out of the car but doesn't, and then cries while she's reading the letters."

    30. Brittany Runs A Marathon

    Amazon Prime

"The end scene just had me BAWLING."

    31. Little Women

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

"Both versions of Little Women. Beth's death in the '90s version absolutely rips me to shreds. The last scene in the more recent version by Greta Gerwig also destroys me. I'm always a puddle at the end."

    32. A Walk To Remember

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I have watched that movie so many times and It has never failed to made me emotional. I'm a sucker for sad romantic dramas and A Walk To Remember is my favourite. Even seeing a picture of that movie makes my mood a little mellow."

    33. Lady Bird

"My relationship with my mum is very similar to Lady Bird's. She kicked me out of the house a couple of years ago. I remember screaming to her in the same horrible way Lady Bird did towards the end of the movie, asking her to forgive me, to love me despite everything I’d done. Now, with our relationship in a much better place, I watch that to remind myself why I love her and, no matter how many obstacles we face, there is a special kind of magic between a mother and her daughter."

    34. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"It is really hard saying goodbye to so many characters. You already cry for Dobby in the first scene, but the Hogwarts Battle...That moment when they all go to inside and we see the Weasleys crying is amazing. And then we see all of them grown up and all I can think is 'all was well'."

    35. Where The Wild Things Are

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"Where The Wild Things Are is such a beautiful film that makes me feel so many different emotions but ultimately leaves me feeling happy."

    36. La La Land

"The last scene of La La Land as she walks out of the bar, and they look at each other gets me. Every. Single. Time. The weight of them knowing what they could have been, but being happy with what they have, breaks me."
