ATTENTION: Agatha: Coven of Chaos has been retitled to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
Filming for Agatha: Darkhold Diaries wrapped last May, and the recent rumors and news about the series have me hoping that we'll get more information soon — I for one need a trailer ASAP.
Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming series:
🚨SPOILER WARNING for Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.🚨
1. The series was originally announced as Agatha: House of Harkness on Disney+ Day in 2021, but by the following summer, the title was updated to Coven of Chaos.
2. As mentioned above, the title has once again been changed — this time to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
This is pure speculation, but perhaps the new title was chosen to connect the show more explicitly to Wanda and Doctor Strange's MCU storyline, which prominently features the Darkhold.
3. There's no specific release date yet, but the show is slated for a Fall 2024 premiere.
4. WandaVision showrunner and Black Widow writer Jac Schaeffer is at the helm of Darkhold Diaries as well.
5. Joining Schaeffer in the director's chair are Rachel Goldberg and Gandja Monteiro.
6. In addition to Kathryn Hahn as the titular Agatha, Debra Jo Rupp and Emma Caulfield will reprise their WandaVision roles, Sharon Davis/Mrs. Hart and Sarah Proctor/Dottie Jones, respectively.
7. Elizabeth Olsen isn't officially confirmed to appear as Wanda Maximoff, but there are rumors she could — and she's been asked about it (multiple times).
8. There will be plenty of new faces, too, including Patti LuPone, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, and Okwui Okpokwasili. The roundup is exciting for sure, but while we have a rough idea of the characters they're playing, much remains under wraps, including details surrounding the plot of the show.
9. During a recent interview with The View, LuPone revealed a few secrets about the show, including the character she's playing.
10. LuPone mentioned that Plaza will also play a witch in Agatha's coven.
11. Locke's character, meanwhile, is the coven's familiar, according to LuPone.
12. It was only recently confirmed by Zamata that she'd be playing the role of sorceress Jennifer Kale, and that "the way we formed this character is very different from what I think people expect."
14. According to Jo Rupp, the series will more or less serve as WandaVision Season 2.
15. Like WandaVision and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, it'll consist of nine episodes.
16. It'll be the first Marvel Studios live-action show to center on a character who didn't have their own comic series.
17. Christophe Beck, who served as composer for WandaVision, both Ant-Man movies, and Hawkeye, is creating the score for Coven of Chaos.
18. There will also be more musical numbers.
19. Filming began in mid-January in Atlanta and wrapped in late May.
20. As for when we'll see it on Disney+, there's no official release date yet, and while Marvel said back in July of 2022 that the series would stream in "Winter 2023," it's looking like it'll instead be sometime in 2024, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
Just announced in Hall H: Marvel Studios' Agatha: Coven of Chaos, an Original series, streaming Winter 2023 on @DisneyPlus. #SDCC2022
The release may or may not be affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. On September 26th, 2023, the WGA strike concluded after a long 5 months. While writers can promote and resume work, SAG-AFTRA, a union for actors, continues to strike. As of October 3rd, 2023, the union continues to be in talks with studio CEOs, and will resume negotiations thru the end of the week. It's possible a resolution may be finalized by the end of the week, marking the conclusion of both strikes.
