35 Things You Should Fix And Definitely Haven't

The hard water stains in your toilet bowl, for starters.

    1. THE THING: Your Keurig machine that's starting to make some not-so-delish coffee.

THE PRODUCT: A set of K-Cup cleaning pods you simply run through your machine to clean its innards before shelling out cash for a new machine! The glass on the left shows the progress with a few cycles.

    2. THE THING: Kitchen knives that are having trouble slicing through tomatoes (and just about every other food).

THE PRODUCT: A handy lil' knife sharpener I can personally vouch for because it transformed a drawerful of leftover roommates' knives into sharp specimens that make meal prepping go so much faster. No need to buy a knife set. Make do with what you have!

    3. THE THING: A nasty, caked-on oven with cheese drippings from frozen pizzas.

THE PRODUCT: A fume-free oven cleaner that'll tackle any grease you haven't been able to (or just haven't had the gumption to address).

    4. THE THING: Your sad houseplant that's in its death rattles.

THE PRODUCT: Indoor plant food spikes to turn that plant bb's frown upside down... and yours too! You spent way too much on it at the farmer's market anyway and are determined to help this one thrive. RIP to all the plants before it.

    5. THE THING: Your makeup brushes you forgot were in fact white when you got them, not the color of your foundation.

THE PRODUCT: A makeup brush cleanser because you and I both know you're not washing your beauty tools as frequently as you should. (Same.) Turns out, they aren't prime for a replacement, they just need a thorough wash.

reviewer pic of blush and bronzer stained makeup brushes, then them looking new and clean thanks to the brush shampoo

    6. THE THING: Your favorite pair of jeans with a busted button you can't find it in your heart to toss.

THE PRODUCT: Needle-nose pliers that, if you don't already have a pair in your tool bag, you absolutely need. A pair like this is my most-used hand tool thanks to their nimble ability to bend things gently, like warped earring hooks, Christmas tree ornaments, and just about anything else that needs some detailed handiwork.

THE PRODUCT: Bar Keepers Friend powdered cleanser to spiff up just about anything you have around your house like car head lights, pots and pans, porcelain sinks, stove tops.... Really, the limit does not exist.

    11. THE THING: Most anything with any sticker or sticky residue on the surface — be it a fridge, garage door window, dining room table, speakers...whatever!

THE PRODUCT: Goo Gone for making all sorts of sticky messes you've resigned to living with disappear — including that old magnet that fused with your rental apartment's fridge (me) or stickers fused with garage door windows (my friend who just bought a house). Seriously though, this stuff is MAGIC for anything you've considered tossing thanks to a sticky mess.

Promising review: "Does exactly what it says. Rather than getting spackle, waiting for it to dry, sanding it down, and tweaking as needed — this cuts the time/effort down! Just rub over the place in need of patching and wipe off the excess. The hardest part is not accidentally getting the product on parts of the wall that don’t need it, but that’s easy to clean up, so it’s not a problem. I used this to patch holes in the wall from a former Wi-Fi router and modem, other than the color difference from the patch to the paint, you’d never know it was patched. Great price, easy to use." —Amanda

    27. THE THING: A couch that's still super comfy but looks like it's been through battle.

THE PRODUCT: A velvet slipcover to give your ragged old couch a complete new look. Plus, the slipcover comes with straps to keep it in place so you don't have to futz with it all the time.

Promising review: "I have never been so excited about a slipcover. Total transformation of our couch and loveseat. I was worried about it not working on our leather couch, but it stays on really well due to the straps and the separate cushion covers. LOVE." —Brian/Liz

    28. THE THING: A wall outlet that seems to have a draft about it. (No, that cold spot is not a ghost.)

The 24-piece set includes 16 outlet sealers, 6 switch plates, and 2 decorative covers.

Promising review: "Socket sealer. Say it with me. Socket sealer. Alliteration can be so much fun. Okay, now with that out of our system, down to brass tacks. I love these. They're cheap and easy to install. They block the draft that is sure to come out of an electrical outlet or a light switch. I've used these in apartments and in houses. They work both ways. Just unscrew the plate, slap one of these bad boys in, and screw the plate back in. Just be sure to not touch metal to metal or skin to metal. It's a good idea to flip the breaker to deactivate the outlets you're installing these on. Otherwise, you'll give yourself a nice jolt. Or three. You know how everyone tells you not to stick a fork into an outlet? The same principle applies here except your finger is the fork and you can't taste purple for a while. So do yourself the favor of flipping the breaker before installing these. Don't make the same mistake as I did. Once. Or maybe three times. I can't remember too good now." —Frequency Jones

    29. THE THING: Stains on grout that just doesn't seem to lift no matter how much you let bleach set on them or scrub.

THE PRODUCT: A grout pen so you don't have to stare at the stained grout and imagine what it used to look like. Grout takes up a teeny bit of space but, as you can see from the pics, makes a huge impact!

A tiled bathroom floor with white grout from the pen and brown grout on parts not yet marked
The same bathroom floor with completely white grout between the tiles

Promising review: "We moved into our new home, and the shower had a really yellow grout. Cleaning didn’t do anything, and I saw this grout pen online. What a saver! Otherwise, I would have just hired someone to replace my shower. I used this grout pen, and my husband was so impressed :D The tip loses its shape fast, but just pull out the TIP AND FLIPPED IT OVER, and you’ll have a new tip." —jennifer

    30. THE THING: Black, nasty looking grout around the edge of your bathtub that seems to be starting at you while you mellow out in a bubble bath.

THE PRODUCT: A mold and mildew removal gel you simply apply, let set for six hours, then wipe away. You don't need to re-grout. You just need this!

Promising review: "Wow! After YEARS of elbow grease and zero results, I tried this stuff before giving up and stripping the old caulking from the top of my shower. I’m so glad that I did, too! I mean, look at these results! Granted, it was on for about eight hours instead of six because I forgot about it, but the black mold/mildew just rinsed away — no scrubbing at all! STOKED! Super easy to use, too!" —Nice marmot!

    31. THE THING: A screen door that, turns out, isn't effective because its tears and holes are letting in bugs.

THE PRODUCT: A roll of window screen tape to continue to keep out flies, bugs, and other unwelcome guests despite that tear in your screen door.

Promising review: "This RHO screen repair tape is fabulous and simple to use! Just cut to size, pull off the clear protective film, and press onto the tear or hole in your screen. That's it! There are 15 feet on a roll and it couldn't be easier. I've patched my screened porch now in five to six spots and while the tape is visible, it prevents bugs from crawling through, which was my goal. If you don't have the time, money, or inclination to completely replace a screen, this is the perfect solution...and the fastest! Will buy again in a heartbeat if I run out of this roll." —sallywally

    32. THE THING: Paint nicks and scrapes that are really killing the mood when you walk through your home and see them out of the corner of your eye.

THE PRODUCT: A container of touch-up paint to help cover up all those chips and marks.

A customer review before and after photo of their dresser with a chip in the paint and then without it

Promising review: "Rather than ditching furniture into a landfill, which is bad for the environment and one's pocketbook, this product allows you to give new life to existing furniture. Between the Soto touchup and new handles, my entertainment center looks like new....for less than $35. If you can use liquid paper, you can use this. I just ordered another bottle for porcelain. This is a fantastic product. You will love it!" —LexiNYC

    33. THE THING: Your silverware drawer that never quite seems to fit everything you need.

Promising review: "Yes, this little utensil tray is really that good! I went from using 12 inches of horizontal space in a lovely but huge wooden utensil tray to about using about 4 inches (whatever the width of this godsend is). It stores my butter knives, steak knives, spoons, forks, and a slew of little teaspoons. I'd guess that the max capacity for each slot is about 10 pieces. For example, I fit four butter knives and four steak knives into the first/knife slot easily, with good wiggle room. This is such a great design. Using this tray opened up about half of my 18-inch wide drawer, which allowed me to decompress the other drawers in my kitchen a bit. I highly recommend this item. It's worth every penny." —Kathleen Cooke

    34. THE THING: Rust stains on your porcelain sink.

THE PRODUCT: Some rust stain-removing gel can get at the unsightly rust that just so happens to show its ugly face around sink drains. It's haunting you every time you brush your teeth, but it's time to banish it.

Promising review: "I. AM. Shook! The previous tenant kept this apartment NASTY. I moved in the day he moved out and was scrubbing this nasty drain for months to no avail. I let this sit for an hour and came back just to peek and wow. The difference is crazy. Now I feel better about taking baths in my own home. Amazing. 9/10 because the instructions says rub lightly. I tried that way first and almost thought it was a dud (Meaning it wouldn’t work LOL). But it definitely worked after letting it sit." —Julia R.

    35. THE THING: Your fitted sheet that just won't stay put on your bed while you're off in Dreamland.

THE PRODUCT: Suspenders for your sheets that are exactly how they sound so no matter how much you toss and turn, your fitted sheet won't pop you in the face in the middle of the night when it comes loose. It happens! I know!
