29 Of The Saddest Episodes Of Television That Have Ever Aired

    BRB, sobbing.

🚨WARNING: This post spoils a lot of TV deaths. 🚨

We asked the members of the BuzzFeed Community to tells us which episodes of television they watch when they're in the mood to have a good cry-fest. Here are some of the most tearful responses:

    1. "Flight," Grey's Anatomy

The episode of Grey’s when Lexie died in the plane crash. The moment that gets me the most is when she’s dying and she knows it and just wants Mark to be there with her. It’s a very well written scene and tears come to my eyes every time I watch it.

    2. "Chapter Fifty-Four," Jane The Virgin

    The CW

When Michael died on Jane the Virgin. Jane's reaction killed me. She fell down screaming and I was just sobbing.

    3. "The Body," Buffy The Vampire Slayer

    The WB

The episode of Buffy where Buffy comes home all happy and finds her mom dead on the couch. I cried so hard the first time I saw that episode and every time I’ve seen it since.

    4. "Be Free," Orange Is The New Black

The scene where Diablo is waiting for Blanca with flowers after she's released — both eager to start their lives together — only for her to be put back in handcuffs to be deported. It's absolutely heartbreaking.

    5. "Abandon All Hope...," Supernatural

    The CW

When Jo and Ellen sacrificed themselves on Supernatural. I was rooting for Jo and Dean, too!

    6. "Everyone's Waiting," Six Feet Under

It felt like all the characters had just come to terms with life and the series was going to end on an OK note...and then the show took us through how each of the characters died. Six Feet Under is one of those shows where you get so attached to the characters, and to watch each of them pass away is just heart-wrenching. I ugly sobbed for a good 45 minutes after, to the point where my boyfriend, now husband, thought something was seriously wrong with me.

    7. "Doomsday," Doctor Who

I bawled in my room watching the scene with 10 and Rose on the beach in the alternate universe. I’m a huge romantic and the idea of being separated from someone you love, never being able to see them again, never getting to tell them you love them back? Heart-wrenching. You can feel the magnetic pull between them, the raw emotions. Even thinking about it...sigh.

    8. "Free," The Act

The last episode of The Act when Gypsy is crying in her jail cell and we see her leaning on her mom (who was actually dead). It was was a breathtaking scene, but I cried so much!

    9. "Papa's Got A Brand New Excuse," The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Gets me every time! I literally cry like a banshee. Such an emotional episode —you can feel it building. When Will says, "How come he don't want me, man?" it's game OVER. Pass me ALL of the tissues!

    10. "Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly," One Tree Hill

    The CW

The episode with Q's funeral in One Tree Hill. Seeing how his death affected so many people, the impact his life brought to the other characters, actually broke my heart.

    11. "Jurassic Bark," Futurama

The last two minutes of the episode, when Seymour dies while he's waiting for Fry to return, causes me to cry for at least half an hour.

    12. "The Quarterback," Glee

It's sad because it's not only commemorating Finn's death, but also the death of the actor Cory Monteith.

    13. "100," Criminal Minds

When Hotch's wife is killed while he's on the phone with her and there's nothing he can do to stop it. Cried like a baby-back-bitch.

    14. "Laying Pipe," Sons of Anarchy

Opie’s death on Sons of Anarchy. I sobbed like a 5-year-old while watching that. It was truly heartbreaking.

    15. "That'll Be The Day," This Is Us

When Jack died on This Is Us. We all thought he was gonna die in burning house, so watching him come out with Kate’s dog and THEN dying suddenly hours later was an emotional roller coaster.

    16. "Things We Said Today," Grey's Anatomy

The episode of Grey's when Adele dies on Bailey’s wedding day and Richard shows up to the wedding anyways. So emotional.

    17. "Goodbye," 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter

The episode of 8 Simple Rules when Paul died because the actor, John Ritter, died in real life. The way the show handled the death was so sad. Every time I watch it, I get choked up.

    18. "My Screwup," Scrubs

The episode of Scrubs when Ben dies. It was such a devastating twist, not only for the fans, but also for Dr. Cox. His reaction was heartbreaking, every time I watch it I cry!

    19. "The Animals," Orange Is The New Black

The episode of Orange Is The New Black when Poussey is killed — my heart was broken for days after I watched that episode. Her death was so unfair and senseless. That whole season was so difficult to watch, but that ending upset me so much I wasn't sure if I could continue watching the show.

    20. "On The Beach," ER

The episode of ER where Dr. Greene dies. It was already mentioned in the episode before that he'd already died, but this one was a flashback of his last few months. You knew he was going to die in the end, but it was still so emotional.

    21. "The Last One," Friends

In the series finale of Friends when they all put their keys on the counter and leave Monica and Chandler's apartment for the last time. Even with Chandler's joke about where they should get a cup of coffee, it's still one of the saddest episodes ever.

    22. "Losing My Religion," Grey's Anatomy

Even though Denny Duquette wasn’t a huge character on Grey’s Anatomy, his death was so sad, not to mention the few episodes following his death. I was ugly crying the entire time.

    23. "No Better To Be Safe Than Sorry," The Magicians

    We miss you, Quentin.

    24. "Leslie and Ron," Parks and Recreation

This episode is all about what caused the rift in Ron and Leslie's friendship. They showed a flashback of Ron missing everyone that left the parks department to go work with Leslie, so he planned to meet with her to ask her for a job. But Leslie forgot all about it and never showed. That shot of Ron sitting alone at the diner as you see him realize that Leslie forgot about him is, legitimately, the worst. I cried to the point of being inconsolable when I first saw it — a reaction that I have never had before or since from a TV show.

    25. "With Tired Eyes, With Tired Minds, With Tired Souls, We Slept," One Tree Hill

    The WB

It's a school shooting episode, so as a teacher it really hits home for me. Seeing the grief that Jimmy went through makes me empathize 100%. It’s also the episode where Uncle Keith died, which just absolutely devastated me. Too much sadness to handle!

    26. "The Door," Game of Thrones

I don't know why, but I full-on SOBBED when I first watched this episode. I've never cried that hard over a damn TV show. Since it aired, I've watched it twice and still cried.

    27. "San Junipero," Black Mirror

The love between Kelly and Yorkie is so moving and having to see them both quietly pass away and choose to find each other again in San Junipero makes me cry every time.

    28. "Wilson's Heart," House

No matter how many times I watch it, I will always ugly-cry when Amber dies in Wilson's arms. "Why aren't you angry?" "That's not the last feeling I want to experience." Gets me every time!

    29. "Goodbye, Michael," The Office

The episode where Michael Scott leaves the office. When Michael takes off his mic and makes the comment about if the footage would ever air and then Pam rushes after him to hug him before he leaves — I LOST it. The show was never the same without him.
