17 Underrated Shows On Netflix You're Totally Missing Out On

The good, the great, and the underappreciated.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us all about their favorite underrated shows on Netflix. Here are some of the underappreciated TV shows they recommended...

    1. One Day At A Time

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

It deals with so many issues that aren't talked about or addressed on TV, including LGBT stuff like coming out and rejection; racism and immigration; sexism in the workplace; and in general, the patriarchy and how cultural traditions clash with feminism, PTSD, alcoholism, and so much more. It's one of the only shows that can be totally hilarious, and also completely honest and real about issues that everyone faces. Everyone should watch this show! β€”skailyr

    2. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is hands down the best show. It's like Australian Sherlock Holmes who is a woman! β€”evieamour

    3. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

So sad it got canceled, but an amazingly funny show. β€”andreatrinidad

    4. Wentworth

Available on: Netflix US and Canada

It's an Australian prison drama β€” like Orange is the New Black but more dramatic and just better overall. The characters are so complicated and the storylines are very interesting. Totally worth it! β€”tpfxc

    5. Crazyhead

Available on: Netflix US, Canada, and Australia

It is a really solid show! Demon hunting wrapped up in a show about a twenty-something girl dealing with mental illness. It's got funny moments, and is nostalgic for those of us who grew up on Buffy and Charmed. β€”monirotten88

    6. The Get Down

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

It shows black and brown people that have dreams and aspirations and intelligence. The soundtrack is amazing, the production is amazing. Please see this show. β€”kimw4567

    7. The 100

Available on: Netflix US, Canada, Australia and more

This show doesn't give you a break. Each episode is really exciting and will keep you on your toes the entire time. All of the characters are so diverse, you just automatically fall in love with them. β€”ryannw449ef5a1d

    8. Broadchurch

Available on: Netflix US, Canada, Australia and more

Season three just started airing in the US on BBC America, but the first two are on Netflix. It's hands down the best crime drama I've ever seen, and I've watched both seasons at least twice. David Tennant and Olivia Colman are absolutely fabulous! β€”lauryny

    9. Bomb Girls

    Global Television Network

    Available on: Netflix US

It's a Canadian historical drama set during World War II highlighting the struggles of women working in a predominantly male controlled bomb factory. The writing is fantastic and it has one of the best lesbian characters I've ever seen on TV. β€”addisonm4bba0a519

    10. Lie To Me

    Available on: Netflix US

It's about this practice run by Dr. Lightman who studies micro-expressions. It's a bit like Sherlock, but the show is actually based off of a real place in California. I love it! β€”leahmeganw

    11. Shameless

Available on: Netflix US, Canada, UK, Australia and more

I feel like Shameless (US version) is super underrated! It's an amazing show that'll hit you right in the feels. It's one of the most realistic shows on Netflix. You'll have a love/hate relationship with many characters (like Frank). β€”naya45431bcf3

    12. The League

Available on: Netflix UK and US

The League is a show about a group of friends in a fantasy football league. You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy the comedy in this show. β€”camilat49836fca7

    13. Hemlock Grove

Available on: Netflix US, UK, Canada, Australia and more

It's such a dark, twisted story unlike anything I've ever seen, and the acting is incredible. It truly deserves more recognition. I love all things supernatural and this was such a different take on vampires and werewolves from what I'd seen before, it's one of my all time favorite shows. β€”jazminm3

    14. The OA

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

Some parts of the show made me emotional to the point of crying and they weren't even sad, just so absolutely stunning. Give it a watch! The first episode is really long since it's an introductory sort of thing, but it's worth spending time on.

    15. iZombie

Available on: Netflix UK, US, and Canada

I have to admit, I was hesitant to start it because I thought it would be a typical cheesy zombie show, and in some ways it is, but there's such a fun and unique take on it. The main character is a zombie and works in the medical examiner's office and works with the police solving crimes. I don't want to give too much away, but I would definitely give this show a 10/10! β€”libbyr4c5aa3bf9

    16. Bates Motel

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

It was a great show with a fantastic five season run! It was horribly underrated while on because it wasn't on mainstream TV! Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga were phenomenal! And the supporting cast Nestor Carbonnel, Olivia Cooke, and Max Theirot were fantastic!! β€”crazyassmom

    17. Chewing Gum

    Available on: Netflix Worldwide

It's a British import (Netflix exclusive), and it is vibrant, warm, hilarious, and awkward AF. Michaela Coel (creator and star of the show) plays a young woman living on the estate with her religious mother and sister. One day, she decides that she needs to have sex (without getting caught by her mom and sister, natch), and fourth wall breaking hijinks and cringe-inducing sexploits ensue. It's unlike any other comedy I've seen! β€”leahc465218359
