9 Sexist Things That Happened At The Oscars

The opening was a song about boobs, and it just went on from there.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
9 Sexist Things That Happened At The Oscars
Hillary Reinsberg

1. This Boobs Song Happened

The opening segment was this song about how sometimes women are not wearing shirts in movies.

2. The Prospect of George Clooney Getting with Quvenzhané Wallis Was Discussed

Yes, it was a joke, but: She is 9 years old. NINE!

3. There Was a “Joke” About Domestic Violence

MacFarlane said of Django Unchained: “Django is a movie where a woman is subjected to violence, or as we call it, a Chris Brown and Rihanna date movie.”

4. Jennifer Aniston Got Called a Stripper

5. Seth MacFarlane Made Fun of Women for Dieting

He joked about the women who conveniently got “the flu” in the weeks before the show.

6. He Also Said “Zero Dark Thirty” Was Evidence That Women Are Difficult

MacFarlane said the movie was an example of “a woman’s innate ability to never let anything go.”

7. And Then He Talked About the Kardashians Having Facial Hair

MacFarlane said a scruffy Ben Affleck might be mistaken for a Kardashian.

8. There Was this Questionable Joke About Jack Nicholson’s House

During a segment featuring Mark Wahlberg and his fictional friend Ted, there was some joking about an orgy that would take place after the ceremony at Jack Nicholson’s house. Many have pointed out Roman Polanski was accused of raping a woman at Nicholson’s house, so some have taken this as a deliberate reference. It could, of course, have been unintentional, but of all the celebrity homes to choose, it seems odd to randomly pick Nicholson’s.

9. MacFarlane Said It Was Fine That No One Could Understand Selma Hayek, Because All They Want to Do Is Look at Her

the boobs song was intentionally bad - his opening was all in reference that he’s famous for making bad jokes (hence why Shatner showed up and told him to class it up). And the Kardashians can be made fun of for having no talent, or being mostly plastic, or for having big asses but you can’t say they have facial hair? The Clooney joke was also taken out of context.

Satire: the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.  Those calling McFarlane out as the sexist have no grasp of what the real problems in this world are.

    • I think the boob song was an accurate comment on Hollywood’s misogynistic use of women’s bodies as objects in films, and how it’s almost impossible to be a successful actress and not expose yourself, at least your breasts, for all to see. Men’s bodies don’t generally get treated in this same way, making some people believe that the camera has been primarily used as “the male gaze” turning women into sex objects.  It harkens back to the earliest days of theatre in Europe, where female actresses were usually also prostitutes, and any who weren’t were treated as such and raped backstage after shows, because it was generally believed that if a woman was an actress that her body was up for grabs, since she was exposing it anyways on a stage and was obviously not a proper “lady.” I’m not saying we haven’t come a long way since then, but there still seems to be a precedent, whether it’s just the necessity of having a perfect body or showing all of it on screen, that many Hollywood actresses are used for their looks and their bodies alone, and that is, in fact, misogynist.  I think more on the subject needs to be discussed openly, which is why I had some respect for Seth’s “Boob song” (though generally I found it crass and immature and stupid).

I thought the show was great - I wasnt offended by any of the jokes, im female, im annoyed that some women are expecting everyone to react that way. there is literally NO JOKE he could have done, involving a women, that wouldnt get complained about. Would it have been better if he had ignored all the actresses? Seriously, something isnt sexist just because it involves a women.  There is way to much faux outrage on tiny little things at the moment and its making the real fight on sexism into a game of crying wolf.  Oh and yeah, maybe you should stop pre-judging and shaming strippers.

      smh

if he had done “we saw your dicks” to be honest i think the actors would be proud and go “oh yea!”. Most men and women think differently about bodies and it’s an ongoing issue to how to respect the difference. In my opinion boobs song is disrespectful in a way that it didn’t consider what the actresses think and had to go through to do nude.

If you look closely you will see that not all of the women named in that song thought it was funny! Most of his “sense of humor” was very middle school gym fodder and inappropriate.

If the Oscars were rife with racist comments many more people would be offended, and rightfully so. Its about time we started taking sexism as seriously as we take racism.

Logic: When someone tells you how something is wrong, try to justify it with how it’s “not actually” wrong.
Logic: When someone explains how something is offensive, explain to them how they are not actually offended.
Logic: When someone explains to you how something is sexist/racist etc. Respond with “no it’s not,” and continue to stay in bubble.
Logic: When someone explains to you how something is wrong, bring up something else that is wrong. To justify one wrong, bring up another.
Logic: Always defend people no matter how wrong they are, ignore all bad things because they are “funny.”

      • oliverr4 3 months ago

Logic: when someone disagrees with you, call them names and explain that they are stupid rather than actually responding to their arguments. Logic: ignoring the context of the comments (including McFarlane’s actual political track record)  Logic: looking at comedy and assuming that the comic actually means what he says rather than obvious subtext of the joke that actually makes it funny

    • samm31 3 months ago

I’m more offended by this article and the asinine comments than any of McFarlane’s jokes.

He’s Seth McFarland. If you expected anything else, you’re as dumb as the rest of Hollywood.

    • erics54 3 months ago

Of course people are entitled to offended. I am in no position to say otherwise. That said, I think people are also entitled to not be offended and/or think it was funny. I don’t think it indicates any kind of internalized oppression etc if a woman is not offended. People are just different, which is good.

Feminists have decided that any reference to female sexuality is an affront to all womankind. Even if we’re referring specifically to female entertainers for whom good physical appearance is often part of the profession itself. Get a life, calm down, and develop a sense of humor.

    • shellyv2 3 months ago

Way to cherry-pick and take stuff out of context. He mentioned a male actor in the same breath as Salma Hayak. I cringed at the misogynistic stuff he DID say, but omitting/adding/blowing things up makes him look better in the end. Cut it out. Stick to the truth, and report on just the horrible things he actually did say.

    • Kryshu 3 months ago

Seth MacFarlane is a satirist. His schtick is not being rude and offensive, his schtick is to skewer sacred cows. If you make politeness and being offended into sacred cows, those cows are gonna get it. Ted is a good example. Ted skewers the sacred cow of innocent, sweet, lovable teddy bears. So his teddy bear is a complete a-hole. Very funny. So lighten up ladies. You have made feminist issues such sacred cows they begs to be taken down. Stop whining and show the world you can take your licks on the comedic podium. Everybody else has to do it. Religion, politics, actors have to take it and feminists should be able to take it too. Any other response just shows what victims you think you are and how fragile is your sense of self-empowerment. And the Chris Brown/Rihanna joke is totally justified. Brown and Rihanna sat there cuddling at the Grammys giving all those women who stood up for her the finger. So don’t call Seth MacFarlane the sexist. You want to know what is really sexist? The whole obsession with celebrities and gowns and designers, hair, makeup fetishism added to smarmy, bitchy putdowns of those who failed the grade is what is really sexist. Funny no feminist critics picked up on that.

Apparently I’m in the minority here, but… I genuinely don’t understand how the acts themselves are fine, but making jokes pointing them out is offensive. Rhianna going back to Chris Brown isn’t offensive, but Seth making a joke pointing out how that’s unhealthy is offensive? Showing your boobs isn’t offensive, but Seth singing a song about how boobs are everywhere is what’s offensive? If you don’t think Selma Hayeck has been cast more for looks than her Shakespearean oratory skills, then you are incredibly naive. As for the joke about George Clooney, people have been making Olsen twins jokes for decades, but apparently we aren’t allowed to acknowledge that. I admit to not watching the Oscars and only going on the bitching I’ve been reading various places online. So maybe he did say something that genuinely would offend me. But nothing being complained about here would.
