22 Secrets Teen Magazine Staffers Will Never Tell You

As a former staffer at Kiss magazine, I can tell you that writing the flowcharts was the best bit.

    1. Working for a teen magazine (aka every '00s girl's dream) was every bit as awesome as you'd imagine.

    2. There was a fashion closet, but we didn't get to keep the clothes after they were shot.

    3. But we were allowed to raid the beauty cupboard.

    4. Destroying a gorgeous Chanel palette in order to swatch it was genuinely heartbreaking.

    5. Interviewing celebs for a teen magazine was way more fun than interviewing them for a grown-up mag.

    6. Going to teen events was endlessly fun.

    7. Eventually, we all ended up using ~youth parlance~.

    8. Sometimes it felt like all the teens wanted were posters.

    9. But then we'd receive a letter from a reader that told us how much they loved what we were doing.

    10. The problem pages were 100% authentic.

    11. Even though we were writing for teens, we were really writing for our former selves.

    12. Shoots were diverse and body positive.

    13. But approaching girls in shopping centres to take part in them was hella awkward.

    14. We could spend all day searching for pap pics of Taylor Swift online.

    15. Writing the competitions copy was the worst part of the job.

    16. And sub-editing the horoscopes pages was the hardest.

    17. But writing quizzes was the best!

    18. Scrap that. Designing the cover was the best bit.

    19. A perk of the job was indulging your inner girly girl.

    20. Burgeoning social media was both a help and a hindrance.

    21. Going to reader events was all kinds of fun.

    22. But best of all, we knew we were doing a job that was important.
