21 Emo Avril Lavigne Artifacts We All Owned

    Everyone's early Avril starter pack.

    1. For emo kids in Canada, '00s Avril Lavigne epitomized #emogoals. Life was incredibly complicated and very xXtragickXx.

We took every cue from our country's angst princess, including but definitely not limited to...

    2. Wearing and collecting silicone bracelets.

    3. A black pleather studded cuffed bracelet (with real spikes if you were truly hxc).

    4. Begging your parents for a pair of black-and-pink-checkered skater shoes (you didn't skate).

    5. Or black chucks (that everyone in your squad needed to own — for the sole purpose of taking this photo:)

    6. Which you paired with incredibly high black socks.

    7. Searching far and wide for black-and-white-striped fingerless gloves.

    8. Or fishnets if you were eXXXtra edgy.

    9. Having an inexplicable need for an athletic sweat band (you didn't play sports).

    10. AND ONE VERY PARTICULAR STYLE AND SKU OF CARGO PANTS.

"They have to be baggy. They have to be cargo. They have to be army green camouflage." — you to your mom

    11. No one could call themselves a real fan without the classic studded belt.

    12. Or the next-level seatbelt belt.

    13. Owning at least one starter black hoodie.

    14. The very essential black-and-white-checkered messenger bag ( that you didn't have much stuff to put in).

    15. And a velcro'd wallet to match (that you also didn't have much to put in lol).

But nothing — NOTHING — was more coveted than the neck tie.

    16. Made iconic by the Complicated music video that forever changed the landscape and economy of neck ties in Canada.

    17. But there were tiers: Of course the striped neck tie came first.

    18. Followed by the worn-oh-so-ironically plaid.

    19. And then the skull-adorned ties that were made specifically for the look.

    20. Basically, Canadian kids everywhere were heard rustling through their dads' drawers.

    21. Because, whether or not it was a "phase," there was no one who understood you better than Avril when you were most miZzunDahst00d.

    22. UH HUH AND LIFE'S LIKE THIS.

Converse Trailers, belts, studded bracelets, black-and-white stockings... and 17 year old tomboy.. @AvrilLavigne
