Here Are 20 Very Controversial Home Design Trends Right Now — Where Do You Stand?

Tag a friend with a vase full of sticks in their house.

The following is a list of 20 common — and controversial — trends in modern home design. For each one, please vote whether you like it or hate it. Ready? Let's go.

1. Signs with inspirational words on them. "Live, Laugh, Love" is the classic, but you might also see ones like "Family" or "Blessed" or "Believe."

2. Neon signs in bedrooms. They're the perfect source of mood lighting for some, while others find them tacky AF.

3. Sliding barn doors. You see them in lots of homes going for a ~rustic~ vibe...even when that home is in the middle of a bustling city.

4. All-gray interiors. So many modern homes go for this neutral palette: Gray walls, gray furniture, gray rugs, gray hardwood floors.

5. "Wine mom" decor. Signs, dishtowels, mugs, etc. with funny sayings about how much the matriarch of the family likes her wine.

6. Mounting your TV above the fireplace. Ever since the invention of flatscreens, this has become the go-to spot for the living room television.

7. Shiplap inside the house. HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have made wooden-planked walls a wildly popular design choice — but not everyone loves the look.

8. Farmhouse kitchens. It seems like everyone wants to go rustic with their kitchen these days — deep farmhouse sinks, wood accents, barn animal decor...and yes, maybe even some shiplap on the walls.

9. All-white kitchens. White cabinets, white tile, white countertops, white backsplash, white dishes...you get the point.

10. Beach-themed bathrooms. People love filling their bathrooms with seashells, sea glass, ocean paintings, nautical knick-knacks, etc.

11. Decorative vases filled with sticks or reeds. You know at least a dozen people with some variation of this in their house.

13. Open concept floor plans. It seems like everyone is knocking down walls to make the first floor of their house one gigantic room.

14. If you know anyone rich, you've probably seen these: Microwaves that you pull out like a drawer, usually installed into the kitchen island.

15. Decorative pillows on beds. Some people go WILD with them, others think they're a waste of time.

16. The "industrial loft" aesthetic — high ceilings, concrete and brick, industrial lighting fixtures, ceilings with exposed wood beams and air ducts. See: All the old factories in your city being converted into luxury condos.

We'll end this with a game of THIS OR THAT. Tell me which of the following you'd rather have in your home...

17. Hardwood flooring vs. wall-to-wall carpet.

18. Open kitchen shelving (pictured below) vs. traditional cabinets with doors.

19. And finally, we have minimalism vs. maximalism. Minimalism means your space is relatively sparse and empty, featuring only a select few, carefully curated items, as pictured here...

...and maximalism means your space is jam-packed with design choices — lots of color, texture, furniture, and decor — as pictured below:
