Here's Why Wonder Woman Will No Longer Use A Sword In The Movies

"She’s a goddess, she can fight, she’s super strong, and she has the skills."

If you're a fan of the 2017 Wonder Woman film (and let's be real, everyone SHOULD be), then you probably remember the iconic sword and shield the superhero wielded during her fights.

Well, the trailer for the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, dropped last week — and first of all, it looks UH-MAZING.

A new era of wonder begins. #WW84 in theaters June 5.

Second of all, many fans noticed that Wonder Woman's trusty sword and shield were nowhere to be found in the trailer.

Here's your monthly reminder that Wonder Woman can throw hands WITHOUT a sword and shield:

And in a recent press appearance to promote the film, Gal Gadot confirmed that the creative team behind Wonder Woman decided to ditch the sword and shield going forward, and explained their reasoning as to why.

"Wonder Woman does not carry a weapon, no," she told the crowd.

"We had an intention to let go of the sword, because there’s something very aggressive with a sword."

According to Gal, the team wanted to let Wonder Woman kick ass on her own:

If you have a sword, it means you need to use it. So we wanted to give that up. And we didn’t feel that the shield was necessary either.

"She’s a goddess, she can fight, she’s super strong, and she has the skills."

"So no, she has the gauntlets. She has the lasso. She has her tiara and that’s about it," she concluded.

This is not the first time that an action star decided not to arm their character with weapons — in fact, Drew Barrymore famously requested a "no guns" rule before signing on to do Charlie's Angels in 2000.
