The Zodiac Killer has never been caught!

The Zodiac Killer, who terrorized Northern California in the late '60s carrying out brutal murders and then sending encrypted letters to the police, taunting them.

Despite a ten-year spree, one of California's most prolific and violent criminals was never caught. In fact, last year the FBI even offered a [$50,000 reward in hopes that new information would boost the investigation again.](http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-serial-killer-reward-20160615-snap-story.html)

The Original Night Stalker was never caught!

The Original Night Stalker, formerly known as the East Area Rapist, responsible for 45 sexual assaults and 12 homicides across California between 1976 and 1986.

The Yorkshire Ripper was identified as Peter Sutcliffe, who was stopped by Yorkshire police because his car appeared to have false number plates. [After noticing that he fit the description of the Yorkshire Ripper, police decided to question him, and he eventually confessed.](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7893959/Bradford-prostitute-murders-profile-of-Yorkshire-Ripper-Peter-Sutcliffe.html) He is serving a life order and will not be released from custody.

Yep he was caught!

The Yorkshire Ripper, who murdered 13 women over a five-year period in the north of England. Most of his victims were sex workers operating in the areas of Leeds and Bradford.

The plot was discovered in 2009 when a person walking their dog stumbled across a human bone. Althought a full investigation was launched, [no one has been convicted and there are still no suspects.](https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/yvqxn5/who-is-the-west-mesa-bone-collector-0000439-v21n9)

Never caught!

The West Mesa Bone Collector killed 11 women most of whom were sex workers, dumping their bodies over a 92-acre plot of land in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In 2001, Gary Ridgway was arrested for four murders, based on DNA evidence. [He later confessed to 49 murders in total, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.](https://www.biography.com/people/gary-ridgway-10073409) He was spared the death penalty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

The case was solved and the murderer was caught!

The Green River Killer, whose first five victims were found in the Green River in the state of Washington, and who mainly targeted sex workers or those in a vulnerable position such as runaways.

Lonnie Franklin Jr was brought to justice via the use use of a familial DNA search – the first successful case in the state. [DNA from the crime scenes matched that of Franklin's son Christopher, whose DNA was on the system due to a felony arrest.](http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/grim-sleeper-serial-killer-everything-you-need-to-know-w434604) Franklin was sentenced to death in 2016.

Caught!

The Grim Sleeper, who killed at least 10 women in South Central L.A., seemingly taking a 14-year hiatus in between and so earning his name.

However there is speculation that [John Bittrol, who is serving for the murder of two prostitutes in the same area in which the remains were found, may be responsible.](http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/09/16/is-there-suspect-in-prostitute-deaths-prosecutor-is-coy.html)

The Long Island Serial Killer has yet to be identified and remains an open case.

The Long Island Serial Killer, responsible for the ten dumped bodies found along a beach highway including that of a small toddler. The remains were found in two discoveries, one in 2010 and one in 2011.

The BTK killer was identified as Dennis Rader when the floppy disk he'd sent led police to his church. [He is currently serving ten life sentences.](https://www.biography.com/people/dennis-rader-241487)

He was caught!

The "BTK" Killer, who would blind, torture and then kill his ten victims, which included a family of four. He would communicate with the Kansas police, and even sent them a floppy disk of information.

Oh dear you're not a true crime expert at all! Maybe murder cases just give you the heebie jeebies so you just don't pay attention!
