A "Lion King" Easter Egg, And 59 Other Behind-The-Scenes Details About "Encanto" (From The Cast, Crew, And Lin-Manuel Miranda)

Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by the song "Belle" in "Beauty and the Beast" when creating "The Family Madrigal."

Given that "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a third week in a row, I can safely assume that the world is not over Encanto's spell.

    Mirabel with fireworks around her

Just last week, I shared a whole bunch of behind-the-scenes facts straight from director Jared Bush's Twitter, and this time I figured I'd dig through the tweets of the cast, crew, animators, and Lin-Manuel Miranda himself to see if I could find any more cool details about the making of Encanto that are worth sharing with you.

The cast of Encanto at the premiere

Here are 60 of the most interesting ones:

    1. Before Bruno's visions were a thing, Mirabel originally had done detective work to figure out why the magic was fading, and had to hide the clues from her dad. This differs from when she (badly) hid the emerald glass vision from her dad in the final version of the film.

“Before we had the concept of Bruno's visions, Mirabel had to do a lot of detective work to piece things together. We tried a version where Agustín walks in on her clues. His stunned reaction stuck, as well as Dolores hearing every word.” - Michael Herrera, Story Artist #Encanto

    Disney / Via Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

    2. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was designed to look as if it were a live performance. The shot in which Mirabel falls through the sand and then walks out through a dark tunnel as she's surrounded by family members was also inspired by dark rides at theme parks.

The cinematography for this song was designed to create the sense of a live performance. For this shot, the layout team was inspired by dark rides at theme parks, where the viewer is moved through the story in a carefully crafted space. Layout by Tyler Kupferer #Encanto

    Disney / Via Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

    3. Lin-Manuel came up with the whole "Dolores is in love with Mariano" plot when he wrote Dolores's "betrothed to another" line in "We Don't Talk About Bruno."

I made up the plotline while writing it, just to give Dolores some Eponine counterpoint energy, it was such a fun detail to pay off... -LMM #Encanto https://t.co/IGCZIlJvQU

    4. Lin-Manuel was inspired by the song "Belle" in Beauty and the Beast when creating "The Family Madrigal."

Facts. "I NEED SIX EGGS!" -LMM #Encanto https://t.co/Fy9F6Fvxdw

    Disney / Via Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    5. Abuela's backstory was a bit different in an early draft of "The Family Madrigal." First off, her name was originally Alba, not Alma. Second, in this version, she was still pregnant with her triplets when her husband was killed/when she arrived at the Encanto.

So originally, this backstory was in the OPENING NUMBER! Here's the lyrics, sung to the same tune as the one you know, with Mirabel narrating backstory. (Also Abuela was still expecting!!!!) -LMM

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"Mirabel: Abuela Alba had to be stronger. A second chance and a brand new baby on the way.

    Abuela Alba gathers building materials.

She rolled her sleeves up and built our home,

A house all by her lonesome in just one day.

Surrounding villagers/survivors sing along the Whoa!

Whoa, that would be enough for you or me

Whoa, Abuela take a siesta beneath that tree

Whoa, Abuela Alba does things differently

She didn't have one kid, she had three!"

    6. If you listen closely, you'll notice that the melody behind Abuela as she sings in the song is the same as "Dos Oruguitas." Lin-Manuel wrote "Dos Oruguitas" after he had already written "The Family Madrigal" and then worked it back into the song.

Wrote Dos Oruguitas, then worked it into Family Madrigal afterwards. -LMM #Encanto https://t.co/OoMjBZAWyp

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    7. This means that before the melody for "Dos Oruguitas" existed, Abuela's part was a bit different in the original version of "The Family Madrigal," as shown below by Lin-Manuel.

Before I wrote Dos Oruguitas, this was the Abuela section of the opening #. My late friend Doreen Montalvo sang the demo, it was our last time working together. -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"Abuela Alba sits holding her three babies.

Abuela Alba: I'll keep you safe.

Mirabel: Who could ask for more?

Abuela Alba: I must be strong.

Mirabel: But this land had more in store.

    Abuela Alba: Our blessings grow...

    Mirabel: Soon butterflies would flower...

Three spectacular and unique (in personality and design) butterflies enter through the window. Alba is stunned as one butterfly lands on each of her babies' heads.

    Abuela: Time moves along...

Mirabel: Each child has a special power."

    8. And if you've never caught it before, actor Olga Merediz does the singing voice of Abuela. This is different from Alma's speaking voice, which is done by María Cecilia Botero. Olga is famously known for playing Abuela Claudia in Lin-Manuel's musical In the Heights.

Now Abuela sings to the tune of Dos Oruguitas in the opening, and the great @TheOlgaMerediz sang it for us...I'm two for two with Olga as Abuela! #Encanto https://t.co/5mPh8xLMLI

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    9. She's not the only In the Heights alum, either. Javier Muñoz, who's played Usnavi in the Broadway musical In the Heights as well as Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton, was part of the vocal ensemble in the film.

Just watched @EncantoMovie I sing in the vocal ensemble (Rare credit). I had no idea how beautiful this story would be when recording in my living room during lockdown! Ugly crying! The incomparable @TheOlgaMerediz @iamstephbeatz & @JohnLeguizamo shine☀️ Watch for your hearts❤️

    10. Animators Jackie Koehler and Andrew Ford worked on the scene in which Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro meet. As it turns out, the two animators are also a married couple.

The first moments of Alma and Pedro meeting were animated by Jackie Koehler and Andrew Ford, who are married in real life. 🕯️❤️#Encanto

    Disney / Via Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

    11. Speaking of married couples, the two animators who did the reference footage for Alma and Pedro's wedding in the montage are also a married couple.

#Abuela wasnt always so serious. For #Encanto we had to capture the feeling of young love & the giggles & silliness that come with it. To get capture this my wife @reblynk & I shot reference more times than I can count each time giggling more & more. @DisneyAnimation

    Disney / Via Twitter: @stodoe

    12. There's a Lion King Easter egg in the montage where Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro meet as well. Animation supervisor David Stodolny revealed that the two were actually talking about Simba and Mufasa during this moment.

For this shot in #Encanto, directors @ByronPHoward and @thejaredbush said this is where Abuela & Abuelo connect for the first time. You know that feeling when you geek out over your favorite movie with someone & realize they get you in ways that others don’t? That’s this moment

    Disney / Via Twitter: @stodoe

So to make this real I wanted to actually make them talking about a scene from a movie. So, I chose one of my favorite #Disney movies, The Lion King. I wrote out the dialogue and then to make it more true to #Colombia for the film translated it into Spanish.

    Twitter: @stodoe

Abuelo Pedro: “..and Simba is ready to give up…” Abuela Alma: “I know. And then Mufasa appears in the clouds.” Abuelo Pedro: “Y Simba esta listo para rendirse…” Abuela Alma: “Yo se. Y entonces aparece Mufasa en las nubes.”

    Twitter: @stodoe

Unfortunately, once the song was layered in it looked like Abuelo was singing the song. So we toned down his mouth movement. You can see the difference between the rough pass and the final version.

    Twitter: @stodoe

    13. He, just like the couple above, had to act out what they were going to animate so that they had some sort of reference footage to work off of. In these clips, he plays Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa. Now, that's talent!

To all the haters who said I couldn’t grow up to be a #disneyprincess. To #animate this shot for #Encanto I had to become three at once. It was such a treat to animate all 3 sisters together. #isabella #mirabel #luisa @DisneyAnimation

    Disney / Via Twitter: @stodoe

    14. Rhenzy Feliz, who voices Camilo, listened to Lin-Manuel's demo of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" for a week straight in preparation for his recording session.

I played Lin’s version of we don’t talk about Bruno for a week straight before I went into shoot it. Riding around the car singing along. Couldn’t help myself. But how could you guess it would hit the way it did? So cool :)

    Twitter: @RhenzyFeliz

    15. After he did his verse in the song, he was a bit hard on himself, given that it was his first time singing in a studio and he feared he'd be recast.

So nervous going in to do my verse! First time ever in a studio trying to sing, never taken any lessons, just not really where I feel most comfortable. Left thinking I had totally screwed it up and if they were considering recasting 🙄. We can be a little hard on ourselves :/

    Twitter: @RhenzyFeliz

    16. The idea of Bruno being 7 feet tall originally came from a story Camilo tells a group of kids (versus what we see in the film, where he first mentions it during "We Don't Talk About Bruno"). Camilo then changes his mind and goes with "8 feet."

I think I remember this actually! The very first audition (I did a couple) I remember a line where I’m telling a scary story to a group of kids and im talking about how someone scary was “7 feet tall” and then I say “no, 8!” I guess that’s this :) https://t.co/HnK0u2AkNM

    Disney / Via Twitter: @RhenzyFeliz

    17. Mariano's walk has since become a TikTok trend, so assistant choreographer Kai Martinez shared the reference footage animators used to create that famous walk.

    Mariano’s family walking to the casita 👯‍♀️🕺🏽👯‍♀️ #encanto #animationreference https://t.co/LdW9SoncPJ

    Twitter: @kai_martinez__

    18. The Casita was originally in competition with Mirabel, as opposed to being friendly with her. In this early preproduction test from Disney animation supervisor Michael Woodside, both the Casita and Mirabel fight for Abuela's approval.

In preproduction, we were playing with the relationship between Mirabel and the House. I did a test where they competed for Abuela’s approval but Mirabel didn’t stand a chance. Ultimately, the House was a more friendly character but it was fun putting this together! #encanto

    Disney / Via Twitter: @AnimWoodsy

    19. While writing "What Else Can I Do?," Lin-Manuel called his former botanist neighbor Fabián A. Michelangeli in a panic to learn about Colombian plants as well as other exotic plants.

Our next door neighbor Fabian in our last apartment is a botanist for the NY Botanical Gardens.Called him in a panic, saying, "I need to know everything about Colombian plants, & other exotic weird plants you can give me." An hour later, all these GREAT NEW WORDS! -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    20. That same song once had a line that Stephanie Beatriz, the voice of Mirabel, loved before it got cut: "Hey, that's my sister! Watch her push beyond what's new!"

ALSO this song used to have a line that got cut that I loved "hey that's my sister! watch her push beyond what's new!" #Encanto

    Twitter: @iamstephbeatz

    21. The layout team looked to Disney's Tarzan for inspiration when creating the action for Isabela and Mirabel during "What Else Can I Do?"

When Isabela opens up more to Mirabel, the Layout team looked to Tarzan as a source of inspiration for how the camera could capture this high-action moment in the song. #Encanto

    22. If you didn't notice, Antonio has a desk in his room that looks like a chigüiro (capybara) and a chair that looks like two toucans.

Have you seen this adorable detail? Right as Antonio enters his room, you can spot a chigüiro-themed desk and toucan-inspired chair designed by Camille Andre, Art Director, Environments. #Encanto

    23. John Leguizamo, who voices Bruno, improvised the rat telenovela plot.

@JohnLeguizamo improvised the plot of the rat telenovela, and it’s one of my favorite jokes in the whole movie #Encanto

    24. Bruno's walls had art depicting his rat friends in imagined acting roles.

Have you spotted some of Bruno’s artwork on the walls? Visual development artist Jose F. Martinez imagined Bruno creating new acting roles for his rat friends, which inspired these pieces. 🐀 #Encanto

    25. According to Lin-Manuel, in the first draft of the script, Pepa was indestructible (as opposed to controlling the weather), Dolores healed with food (as opposed to having super hearing), and Julieta controlled the weather (as opposed to healing with food). There was some evidence of this in the early unreleased Mirabel song below:

In the first draft, PEPA was indestructible, DOLORES healed with food, and JULIETA controlled the weather. Here's some lyrics from an early Mirabel song in this spot. -LMM #Encanto

    "(to Isabela)

    (to Dolores)

Or wash away in a storm.

    (her parents)

But I know that there are things I feel. That my mother's home cooked meals won't heal. So reveal to me the time it'll take, when you finally give me my big little break because..."

    26. "All of You" was originally seven minutes long and had to be cut down to four minutes.

This finale All Of You was originally 7 minutes long but we were OUT OF TIME. They were like, "we can only animate four minutes." Y'all wanna see what I cut? -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    27. There was a sweet exchange between Mirabel's parents in the song that didn't make the final cut. You can read it below:

There was an extended moment with Mirabel's parents in All Of You: Agustin: She takes after you. [We see Mirabel leading the rebuilding effort Agustin: That's exactly how you were. Julieta, looking on: Oh honey, no one heals like her... -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

    28. The scene in "All of You" in which the townspeople come to help the Madrigal family rebuild originally had three extra lines that we never saw.

The part where the town comes in always make me cry--I'm a sucker for community coming together. This was the longer first draft. - -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

The townspeople were supposed to say:

"We heard the news (and we came running)

Are you okay? (You'll be okay)

    We came to help."

    29. The first draft of Abuela's enterance in this final song was also much different from what we saw.

This was the first draft of Abuela's entrance in All Of You. -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"Abuela: And I'm sorry for what I've done wrong. I've been holding on too tight.

    Julieta: Mom?

Abuela: I was so afraid of losing what we've made, focused on the dark instead of letting in the light.

    [Abuela regards Julieta]

I lost your father far too soon, I couldn't bear to lose you too.

    [Abuela holds Bruno's hand.]"

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"Abuela: The miracle is not some magic we forgot. The miracle is you, not some gift, just you...

Abuela/Mirabel: The miracle is you, all of you, all of you."

    30. Animators felt it was important to create mannerisms that were unique to the characters' personalities. For example, Dolores never claps with both hands, since she's sensitive to noise, so she claps with the tips of her index fingers.

“Each character has their own unique personality. Since Dolores can hear a pin drop from across town, she wouldn't necessarily clap loudly like the rest of her familia. We decided we would have her clap with the tips of her two index fingers!” - Rebecca Perez, Animator #Encanto

    Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

    You can see that here:

#encanto #dolores clapping with her fingers

    31. Speaking of tiny details, in the scene where Mirabel comforts Antonio prior to his ceremony, she points to the gift she made for him with her lips. This is a common gesture for many Latin American people.

Ok listen you see that gesture Mirabel just made? Pointing with her lips? That is a super common way to gesture in Latin cultures. It’s super common in my house and when I was little and going to school I got made fun of for making this gesture because the other https://t.co/wyxZf7qRzw

    Disney / Via Twitter: @Digitlartmonstr

This was, of course, added intentionally and drives home just how much detailed care went into creating this film.

It makes me so happy to see that people are noticing this stuff. Animation takes so long that every tiny thing in the film is intentional & rarely an accident. This is the stuff Disney is spending lots of time to try to get right & Im so proud to be part of this team right now https://t.co/8rc9FE65YE

    32. This touching scene was also the first to go into production, and everyone knew it would survive the many iterations that scripts and films go through as they're completed.

This scene was the first one to go to production, right @thejaredbush? It was so good we knew it would survive all revisions. -LMM #Encanto https://t.co/y3e8t7HHtc

    33. Camilo saying "Worth a shot" after he impersonated Dolores was a nod to Maui's "Worth a shot" joke in Moana.

Another great group of #Encanto questions today! I’ll sign off with this tidbit - we tried to avoid too many winks in Encanto, but I had to add this one, Camilo saying “Worth a shot” is a nod to the #KandellBrothers who wrote Maui’s “Worth a shot” joke in @DisneyMoana. 🌊🌴🦋✨

    Disney / Via Twitter: @thejaredbush

    34. Animator Hyrum Osmond couldn't quite use the dance reference footage for the scene in which the family dances around Mirabel in "We Don't Talk About Bruno," so he improvised with the help of his wife and came up with that final dance sequence himself.

I loved this song so much 😂 261 frames, 7 characters and a fish. You’ll see that the dance ref wound up not being exactly what I needed so I improvised. Huge thanks once again to my wife for helping me plan it all out. (Story boards and layout are not my work) #encanto #disney

    Disney / Via Twitter: @mrhyrum

    35. Speaking of helpful wives, Michael Woodside's wife also modeled for him so he could create this pose for Isabela.

Early in #Encanto preproduction, I did a pose of Isabela who needed to look effortlessly graceful. My wife @BrittWoodsy was kind enough to model options for me to begin with. She wants me to say she didn’t know I would put this pic online for all of you… gotta love the outfit😉

    Disney / Via Twitter: @AnimWoodsy

    36. You may not have noticed that Señora Pezmuerto (aka the lady with the dead fish) is swapped out for Dolores when she goes offscreen in this scene as well. This was because the directors wanted both Dolores AND the "fun energy" of Señora Pezmuerto with "reduced complexity," so Hyrum found a workaround.

Many have asked why Fish Lady turns into Dolores. Directors wanted Dolores and the fun energy of Fish Lady, but with reduced complexity. Solution-a quick swap off screen. I pulled the camera over to show how I handled it. I don't think Dolores has Camilo powers😂 #disney #encanto

    Disney / Via Twitter: @mrhyrum

    37. The first draft of the bridge on "Surface Pressure" had Luisa questioning if she would ever feel joy. Dark.

My first draft of the bridge of Surface Pressure, still exploring the ramifications of Luisa's gift... -LMM #Encanto

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"And hey, I don't feel pain. Not in the same way. But is that also saying I might never feel joy? Or exultation? Or simple pleasure? How does one measure, this growing pressure..."

    38. Luisa was originally supposed to say, "I'm taken for granted, ah!" instead of "And I glow 'cause I know what my worth is" at the end of the first verse of her song.

Oh, the first draft of the end of that first verse: "I'm TAKEN FOR GRANTED AH!" -LMM #Encanto #Surfacepressure

    Twitter: @Lin_Manuel

"On the surface, I've got nerves, yes. And my skin is completely impervious. Diamonds & platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em. I break what I'm handed, I'm taken for granted, ah!"

    39. The first animation dialogue test with Jessica Darrow (who voices Luisa) contains a line we didn't see in the film. She says to a donkey, "You shouldn't have seen that, I'm sorry. I'm fine. I'm strong. I just...god, there's just so much pressure, you know?"

The first animation dialogue test with @itmejessdarrow voicing Luisa in #encanto! Animation by me! Cloth simulation by no one (hence the balloon skirt)! More info here: https://t.co/JgTlbAn2cg

    Disney / Via Twitter: @AnimWoodsy

    40. Speaking of the donkeys, they were not "built" to be able to dance, but once animation supervisor Michael tested it out, it was clear they were natural dancers.

“When I saw the storyboards of dancing and singing donkeys, I jumped on a quick animation test to see if our donkeys could stand up and sing. (1/2)

    Disney / Via Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

Olga Parshina then animated them, and they've been instantly iconic ever since.

They were built to do neither of those things but it seemed to work out of the gate, like they were born dancers. I love how they turned out in the film, which were animated by Olga Parshina!” - Michael Woodside, Animation Supervisor (2/2) #Encanto

    Twitter: @DisneyAnimation

    41. Right after Luisa floats into the sky while dreaming of a life without pressure, there was supposed to be a following couplet that says, "Pressure like a snap, snap, snap, till you get it right, oh. Pressure like a tap, tap, tap in the dead of night, oh."

A discarded couplet from Surface Pressure. -LMM #Encanto

    45. Aside from being the first all-Spanish song written by Lin-Manuel, the Oscar-nominated "Dos Oruguitas" was also purposely written as if it were a folk song "that has been sung for generations."

“Dos Oruguitas” is the first song @Lin_Manuel ever wrote beginning to end in Spanish. The song is written as if it were a folk song that has been sung for generations and is performed by the incredible @SebastianYatra! #Encanto 🐛🦋

    48. In order to create the cool 3D effect in Bruno's emerald glass, animators had to create a brand-new "teleport shader" that could embed one object inside another.

For the emerald shard treatment of Bruno’s vision, a new teleport shader was designed that could embed a three-dimensional object inside another object's volume. The end result is a physically correct refracted holographic effect directly in the final render. #Encanto

    49. New technology was also used by animators to give each character's eyes more depth and speckled highlights.

A new naturalistic eye shader was employed on #Encanto that strictly follows human eye anatomy and adds speckled highlights. The new technology gives artists more control of the look of the characters’ eyes and adds more depth.

    51. The magic of the Encanto had its own "shape language." In the candle's case, it created orbs that looked like "bokeh" that's created in a picture. Bokeh is defined by Nikon as "the effect of a soft out-of-focus background that you get when shooting a subject, using a fast lens."

“The candle’s eternal flame creates orbs that look like bokeh created in a picture, but we call them ‘faux-keh’ since it’s not a lens effect. That helped inform the shape language of the magic of the #Encanto.” - Erin Ramos, Head of Effects Animation

@RoshanaMN Beautifully said. While making this film we had a group in the studio called #familia (w/ Latino employees). We often talked about exactly this. Displacement, pressures 2 succeed, gratitude 4 the sacrifices of our parents/grandprnts & how we navigate the responsibilities we felt.
