We Know Which "Are You Afraid Of The Dark" Episode Still Haunts You

This episode is kind of sad: an old woman named Madeline is forced to live on her own without any friends or family because her nephew broke his promise that she could live with him. And yet, it is also so very scary: Madeline befriends a young girl named Stacy, but then we learn that MADELINE'S BEEN DEAD FOR 10 YEARS. Sure, by the end of episode she's ultimately returned to her kindly ways, but for a brief period, she terrorized the living hell out of Stacy, and by extension, you.

Arcade games and video games may seem innocent but this episode showed you that they can be anything but. The most terrifying part of this episode comes in the last few minutes. A kid gets locked in a mall and the characters (including a masked executioner) in the pinball game he's so obsessed with come to life, but he defeats them and everything seems cool. Until he realizes that HE'S TRAPPED IN THE GAME AND HE'S NEVER GETTING OUT. You still remember that giant silver pinball that looms over him at the end of the episode. "Enjoy your free games. You'll be playing them FOREVER," says Mr. Olson, whose face will never not be shudder-inducing.

That blue slime oozing from people's mouths. That cringe-worthy laugh. THAT FACE. The Ghastly Grinner was the most terrifying villain, and despite the fact that this episode had a rather underwhelming denouement (the Ghastly Grinner met his unfortunate fate with an eraser?!), you will always remember this episode, especially when you see anything having to do with comic books.

The words "computer virus" conjure images of this frighteningly memorable episode for you. One of the weirdest, and thereby creepiest, parts was the actual virus, which took the form of a little silver dude with protruding brains and red eyes. His evil plan? To take over a kid's brain. The mere concept of being trapped in a virtual reality game and having your brain overtaken is the stuff of nightmares. And remember that little computer-chip thing that was implanted in the kid's hand?! This episode definitely left a deep, lasting impression on you. Understandably.

The Tale of the Renegade Virus

This episode is most likely responsible for causing an entire group of '90s kids to have a fear of clowns. And can you blame them? Zeebo the clown was downright petrifying. In this episode, a young, overconfident kid steals Zeebo's nose, but then Zeebo wants it back. Remember that demonic, croaky little voice demanding the kid to, "GIVE IT BACK." Funhouses and clowns: two things you don't do. And how could you when you're haunted by the creepy rhyme, "It's the most fun in the park when you're laughing in the dark?"

This is undoubtedly one of the creepiest "Are You Afraid of the Dark" episodes. A boy (Ricky) dies despite the fact that his BFF tries to save him and then five years later, Ricky starts appearing to his BFF, pale skin, sunken eyes, otherworldly glow and all. This episode has all things haunting: nightmares, visions of a dead child, appearances of red bicycles, and a pervasive eeriness that lingers long after the fact. It is the ultimate embodiment of spooky.

What is it about porcelain dolls that is so unsettling? Take an already creepy object, add "Are You Afraid of the Dark," and you end up with a truly haunting television episode. One of the reasons this episode was so terrifying is that you definitely knew someone that had a doll collection. And after seeing "The Tale of the Dollmaker," you could never look at it the same way. Another reason is that the appearance of Susan was eerie as hell. And so is the mere concept that a young girl could even turn into a doll. Sure, it sounds ridiculous, but this episode made it seem oh-so-very real.

Indoor pools? No thanks. Not after seeing this episode. This was an episode that was scary right from the start, when a little boy drowns in a school pool in the 1950s, and continues to build and build until we learn that the pool was built on a graveyard and we eventually see that red, gross dead body thing. Now that is something you will \*never\* forget.

The Tale of the Dead Man's Float

This is hands down one of the most terrifying episodes of "Are You Afraid of the Dark." You can still vividly remember being shaken to your core by that pale, dark-haired little girl standing in the mirror, trapped, and the words "Help me" written in black all over the wall. This was some freaky sh\*t when you watched the episode as a child. And in fact, seeing the picture of that little girl ghost creeps you out even now. Sure, the ending was actually kind of heartwarming (little girl reunited with her mother), but the path getting there was not for the faint of heart.
