21 "What If...?" Details That Are Small, Cool, And Make This Ultron Episode Even More Wild

There are so many good pop culture Easter eggs this week.

🚨Warning: There are MASSIVE spoilers ahead for What If...? Episode 8 on Disney+!🚨

Hi, hello. I hope you recovered from What If...? Episode 7 and are ready to dive into the next episode. So here are all the details I noticed in Episode 8, aka "What If...Ultron Won?"

If you're new to these posts, welcome, and I apologize for all of my nerdy yelling! If you're returning after my weekly WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, AND Loki Easter eggs/details posts, thanks so much for coming back!

    1. First, while fighting Ultron's robots, Hawkeye has a neat invisibility cloak. I don't know if there are any comic origins for this, but I'm assuming he used the cloaking tech often used by S.H.I.E.L.D. to create this.

    2. In 2013's Age of Ultron comic books, a lot of our favorite heroes die and Hawkeye and Black Widow are two of the remaining Avengers, which is similar to this episode.

    3. Tony's line about seeing a suit of armor around the world is taken directly from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

    4. When The Watcher talks about Vision being created, Natasha is standing with the other Avengers, but in Age of Ultron, Nat wasn't there because she was captured, and Wanda and Pietro were there in her place.

    5. This is another What If...? episode where Tony Stark dies, which further proves that his death is an "absolute point in time," which makes it unchangeable and unmovable, no matter the timeline.

    6. While The Watcher tells us how Ultron gained control, we get a quick cameo from General Thaddeus Ross, who we've seen in The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow.

    7. Am I the only one who thought it was ironic that Ultron split Thanos in half because Thanos's main purpose was always to get rid of half of all life? No? Just me?

    8. When Ultron visits Sovereign to destroy it, you'll notice the Guardians of the Galaxy are there, which aligns with their mission from the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

    9. Not really a hidden detail, but you can quickly spot Korg fighting Ultron's robots on Sakaar before it's destroyed.

    10. When Captain Marvel arrives on Nova Corp to try and stop Ultron, she calls him "Skynet" and talks about a killer robot movie, which are both nods to The Terminator.

    11. Clint asks Natasha if she's ever seen Raiders of the Lost Ark as they walk through the archive room, and that's because this moment resembles when the Ark gets taken to a warehouse.

    12. When Natasha opens a box, she finds Alexei's Red Guardian shield from Black Widow.

    13. Also, I'm choosing to believe that Natasha's chosen family also existed in this universe, so Natasha uses humor to cover up her feelings about finding Alexei's shield.

    14. Clint references Star Wars: A New Hope while searching for Zola's file inside the warehouse.

    15. When Nat and Clint find Zola in the computer, he's in the facility in Siberia that we see in Captain America: Civil War, when Bucky and Steve track down Zemo.

    16. Zola mentions that Clint's middle name is "Francis," which is something taken directly from the Marvel comic books.

    17. Clint's death at the hands of Ultron's robots mirrors Natasha dying on Vormir in Avengers: Endgame.

    18. An obvious detail, but I just love that Natasha does her signature landing pose with Red Guardian's shield here — Yelena would 100% make fun of her for it too.

    19. When Ultron is fighting The Watcher, he literally devours a whole universe, which could be a nod to the comic book character Galactus, who is literally known as the Devourer of Worlds.

    20. In the universe Ultron and The Watcher crash into, you can hear Steve Rogers being sworn in as president of the United States.

    21. And finally, the guy from What If...? Episode 7, who is seemingly wearing Taika Waititi's pineapple shirt, appears in this episode too.

Absolutely obsessed with What If...? Check out all of our coverage now.
