For millennials of a certain age, "I'll Be Missing You" by Diddy is one of those songs that take you back to a specific time and place.
That time and place is the summer of 1997. It spent 11 weeks (!!!) at No. 1 that year!
The only problem is that Diddy never cleared the sample of the Police's song "Every Breath You Take."
And sorry, sweets, but you gotta pay for that shit!
A clip of Sting on TheBreakfast Club, where he discusses how much Diddy has to pay for using that sample without permission, is going viral.
It was reportedly $2,000 a day!
Apparently, though, it's not *just* $2,000, because Diddy responded to the clip to say it's actually $5,000 a day.
A day!!
That's nearly $2 million a year!
People are naturally impressed.
Others are very jealous.
This person says it's worth every penny.
But ultimately, I'm like...is that really something to brag about (LOL)?
This reminds me of Sisqó, who essentially gets no royalties from "Thong Song" because he didn't clear the Ricky Martin sample.
Moral of the story: I need to write an iconic song that is sampled decades later so I can make a shit ton of passive income, instantly retire, and live off of that.
