Response to Tell Us Your Best Tips For Raising LGBT Kids:
Be patient with them and yourself. When my daughter first came out in was surprised how upset I was considering my oldest childhood friend is gay and I’ve plenty of other gay friends. In fact I always thought of it happened I would be cool about it. However when in actually did happen I found myself struggling a little with the idea. I realise now I needed to grieve for the life I had expected and dreamt for her all those times I held her as a baby, as a little girl and a young woman. I needed time to acknowledge that it was going to be different to what I thought and that it would be okay in the end if I trusted her. It wasn’t homophobic or wishing she was straight. I just needed time to let it settle in my head. So whether you’re a parent or the child, be patient with each other !
It’s a journey for both of us, we’ve our good days and bad ones. !
I’m always checking my transteen’s laundry to make sure they’re washing their binders regularly. Wearing them that close to your skin in warm conditions can cause skin sensitivity or fungal infections, get two and wear in rotation and make sure you wash them after a day or so’s wear !
