17 Times Celebs Outshined Someone Else's Wedding With Their Outfits Or Their Drama

It 2012, Taylor Swift allegedly crashed a Kennedy family wedding with her then-boyfriend, Conor. The mother of the bride claimed she asked the singer not to attend because she didn't want her presence to distract from her daughter on her big day, but she showed up anyway.

For many people who get married, a wedding is all about tradition. There are certain rules — many of them unspoken — that everyone's expected to follow. Though many couples choose to break standard wedding traditions or rules, going against expectations can lead to a lot of judgment.

Here are 17 times celebs were called out over wedding faux pas:

    1. Recently, Hailey Bieber attended the wedding of Stephanie Shepherd and Larry Jackson wearing white — a color (obviously) typically reserved for the bride.

    2. On The Kardashians, Kourtney Kardashian Barker accused her sister, Kim, of using her Dolce & Gabbana-themed wedding as a "business opportunity" because, a few months later, she used multiple similar looks in the limited collection she creative directed for the brand.

Kourtney said, "I feel like there's such an abundance of opportunities. It's not about business, there's just so much, and it takes precedence over hurting your sister. It's legit copying my wedding, like, everything that I did was pulling references of '90s. … I think she sees everything that I had there and takes it for her own, and she doesn't even see it, she sees the dollar signs."

    3. When Travis and Kourtney Kardashian Barker attended a friend's wedding in 2021, fans criticized their PDA at the receptions as "tasteless."

    4. In 2021, Kendall Jenner was branded "blatantly disrespectful" for wearing a very revealing Monot dress to her friend's wedding because many people thought she was trying to pull attention away from the bride and groom.

The bride, Lauren Perez, defended Kendall, telling one commenter, "[KENDALL] LOOKED STUNNING, AND I LOVED IT!"

Kendall herself added that she'd asked Lauren for approval to wear the dress.

    5. The same day as Kendall, Kim Kardashian wore her own controversial dress to her longtime friend Paris Hilton's wedding to Carter Reum. Some people thought the top was too revealing for the occasion.

    6. At Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's 2014 wedding, Jaden Smith broke both the "no wearing white" rule and standard formal attire conventions by wearing a white Batman costume.

He told GQ, "I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom which was fun, but also, at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so."

    7. In 2023, Olivia Wilde "wore a wedding dress to a wedding just so [she] could make a joke about it in [her] toast."

On her Instagram stories, she clarified that she had permission from the grooms, Colton Underwood and Jordan C. Brown.

    8. In 2021, Candace Cameron Bure and her daughter Natasha were called out for wearing red to a wedding, which is often considered bad etiquette at Western weddings because it's distracting.

In response to Instagram comments about her color choice, Candace said, "Anything goes in LA. There were four women wearing red dresses to the wedding. ... Don't poke mama bear. Some of you still need to learn manners. Don't like? Scroll through. Some of you ruin the fun of sharing on social media for everyone."

    9. In 2018, Sophie Turner was criticized for wearing a bold red blazer dress to her Game of Thrones costars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie's wedding. She later said she'd "forever regret" the outfit choice.

She told Elle UK, "One of my worst looks...I had a fashion emergency. It was either the thigh-high boots or these nice heels, but I felt like if I just wore the heels all of my leg is showing, if I cover up a little bit then... urgh, it was a disaster. Worst fashion choice."

    10. The morning after Joe Jonas tied the knot with Sophie Turner in Las Vegas in 2019, it "blew up in [their] faces" when his parents called to ask about it — and Joe realized he'd forgotten to invite them.

In a GQ video, he said, "So, kids out there, make sure you tell your parents when you're getting legally married."

    11. Sophie Turner called out Diplo, who was one of her and Joe Jonas's wedding guests, for livestreaming the ceremony without permission because they'd wanted to keep it a secret. Joe also said that Diplo "ruined" the wedding.

Sophie told Net-A-Porter, "It's tricky when people livestream it. It would have been better if no one had known, but I actually think it was funny."

Joe told Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, "I love Diplo. But he loves his 'gram more than a 13-year-old. He posts every five seconds. He literally livestreamed with dog face filters."

    12. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were criticized for holding their 2012 wedding at Boone Hall, a former plantation where people had been enslaved.

In 2020, Ryan expressed his regret over the venue choice, telling Fast Company, "It's something we'll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for. It's impossible to reconcile. What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy. Years ago, we got married again at home — but shame works in weird ways. A giant fucking mistake like that can either cause you to shut down, or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn't mean you won't fuck up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn't end."

    13. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host asked Jennifer Lopez why he hadn't been invited to her second ceremony with Ben Affleck, who was invited to his wedding. Jimmy joked, "I'm wondering if Matt Damon had something to do with it? Is it possible he suppressed my invitation to the wedding?"

Jennifer replied, "It's possible. I don't know. I'll get into it later. I'll find out. I'll get to the bottom of it and get back to you."

Then, he gave her a wedding gift — two sterling silver "bride and groom" Dunkin' Donuts cups.

    14. In 2019, Kylie Jenner was accused of trying to upstage Hailey Bieber when she wore a dramatic gold dress to her and Justin's second wedding ceremony.

    15. Fans criticized NeNe Leakes for wearing a see-through dress, which left her nipples and underwear visible, to her Real Housewives of Atlanta costar Porsha Williams's 2022 wedding.

    16. When Vera Wang tweeted pictures of the look Ariana Grande wore to her brother Frankie's wedding to Hale Leon in 2022, some commenters accused her of trying to "deliberately outshine" him by wearing a "'statement' outfit."

    17. And finally, in 2012, Taylor Swift allegedly crashed a Kennedy family wedding with her then-boyfriend, Conor. Vicki, the mother of the bride, claimed she asked the singer not to attend because she didn't want her presence to distract from her daughter on her big day.

Vicki told the Boston Herald, "They texted me an hour before the wedding and asked if they could come. I responded with a very clear, 'Please do not come.' They came anyway...I personally went up to Ms. Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, politely introduced myself to her, and asked her as nicely as I could to leave. It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me."

However, Taylor's spokesperson, Paula Erickson, countered Vicki's claims. She said, "There is no truth to that. Taylor was invited to the wedding, and the bride thanked her profusely for being there."

On Today, Kathie Lee Gifford, who's the step-grandmother of the bride, said, "Conor had e-mailed [Vicki Kennedy] or texted her or something like that, like an hour before and said — see, here's the thing: he had not RSVPed. So, she didn't even know if he was coming or not. She heard that he might be. But he'd gotten in touch with her an hour earlier and said basically, 'Can I bring my girlfriend?' and... She said very nicely, 'Please do not come.' You know. And, because — guess what? Well then, they came." She also explained that Taylor may not have known she wasn't invited, but she and Conor did leave the second time they were asked.

Taylor herself told Rolling Stone, "I think that story was based on the biggest misunderstanding, 'cause I would never knowingly show up somewhere that I thought I wasn't invited to... And I would never want to upstage anybody."
