21 Elite Olympians Who Competed In Both The Summer And Winter Games, Including The Only 5 Who've Won Medals In Both

I wish I had 1% of their motivation!

The athletes who make it to the Olympics are the best in the game (no pun intended). As if completely mastering one sport wasn't enough, some Olympians have reached the top of two sports and competed in both the Summer and the Winter Games.

Here are 21 athletes who competed in both the Summer and Winter Olympics:

1. Hungarian athlete István Déván was the first person to compete in both Olympics.

2. American athlete Eddie Eagon is the only person in history to win a gold medal at both competitions — for boxing at the 1920 Summer Olympics and for bobsledding at the 1932 Winter Olympics.

3. Jacob Tullin Thams won the ski jumping gold medal for Norway at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and he later won the silver medal in sailing at the 1936 Summer Games.

4. German speed skater Christa Luding-Rothenburger won gold in the 1000m and silver in the 500m at the 1988 Winter Olympics.

5. Canadian cyclist Clara Hughes won her first two bronze medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Bonus fact: the athletics competitor to bobsledder pipeline is strong. Since 1920, 48 track and field athletes besides Williams have made the switch to bobsledding and competed in both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
