It's okay for your gender expression to be in the binary for any reason, whether it's comfort, safety, or anything else. You are valid if you present as a binary gender, and you are valid if you present as your gender assigned at birth.
When I came out as queer, I had already hinted that I wasn't straight. I don't know why, but I couldn't stop laughing. I walked into my mom's room, laughed for a full minute, said "I'm queer as fuck" and kept laughing as I left.
"Since you're trans, aren't you going to, like, grow make genetalia?"
I've also had someone ask me about my personal religious beliefs because of my "alternate lifestyle" and my "evolvement with the sexual liberation that is ruining this country".
