Here's Everything That Was Just Revealed About The "Beetlejuice" Sequel, Including An Official Photo Of Jenna Ortega As Lydia's Daughter

    Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, and several other stars are joining the anticipated sequel.

    It's finally here! On Wednesday, the first official photos from the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel were released, and they're showcasing the return of several beloved characters and the introduction of two additions to the story.

    In case you didn't know, on Sept. 6, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters. The sequel reunites director Tim Burton with several original cast members from the 1988 film, including Michael Keaton as the eponymous ghost.

    Winona Ryder is also back as a now grown-up Lydia Deetz.

    As is Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz, Lydia's stepmother.

    They'll be joined by several stars new to the franchise, including Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Lydia's daughter.

    And Justin Theroux as Rory, though we don't know too much about his character just yet.

    Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci have also been cast as new characters.

    As for the first-look photos just released, one is a standalone of Michael as Betelgeuse.

    The second shows Catherine, Jenna, Winona, and Justin at what appears to be a graveside funeral. These costumes! Catherine's hat, Jenna's jacket, Winona's glasses, and Justin's coat are everything.

    Entertainment Weekly was the first to report the first-look photos, and Tim Burton told the publication the sequel will chronicle a death in the Deetz family decades after the first film.

    "That's all I will say," he told the publication. "There's something that happens that sets things in motion." Notably, Burton said "We'll see" when asked if the dead character was Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones), the father of Lydia.

    A press release for the film reveals more about the sequel's plot, noting that an "unexpected tragedy" brings the Deetz family back to Winter River, the setting of the first film.

    "Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened," the press release said. "With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem."

    Last month, the title was announced, and a poster was released.

    Tim also told EW how he settled on the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice title, noting that Beetlejuice 2 didn't make sense as a title considering it's 35 years since the first film was released. "It didn't feel like that kind of a movie. The other one I thought of, because one of my favorite Dracula movies is Dracula A.D. 1972, was Beetlejuice 2024 A.D. But this was a nice simple one," he said.
