Here Are Some Classic Iconic Australian Foods: Would You Try Them?

I, for one, think cheeseslaw sounds disgusting.

This one's only really eaten widely in South Australia, but it's certainly something that divides opinion. It's basically a meat pie, covered in tomato sauce, floating in a bowl of pea soup. 

Cheese and bacon roll

Whether you get it from the local bakery, Bakers Delight, or the supermarket, these are the best snack. It's a white bread roll covered in cheese and cubes of bacon, melted and cooked to perfection.

This one's a specialty from Broken Hill in rural NSW, and though it hasn't quite made it into mainstream Aussie society, it has a lot of fans as a side dish at a BBQ. It's basically coleslaw with heaps of mayo and a cup of shredded cheddar cheese mixed through.

Caramello Koala

This one's a small koala-shaped chocolate the length of your thumb, filled with gooey sweet caramel.

Sure, all these ingredients aren't foreign to anyone outside Australia – but the classic combo of a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket, a tub of cheap premade coleslaw, and a six-pack of soft dinner rolls is a quintessential Aussie meal.

These ice creams are eaten at the cinema — and at the cinema only. If you saw someone sitting in a park eating a choc-top, it'd look extremely out of place. It's just a scoop of ice cream, covered in a hard chocolate shell, in a waffel cone.

Kanga bangas

Or as you may know them, kangaroo sausages. They're not as common here as regular beef sausages, but kanga bangas are a great BBQ option, and a way more sustainable meat.

A Christmas lunch staple, this has to be Australia's favourite salad. Take a giant cabbage, chop it up, add some soy sauce and sesame oil, and a generous heap of crispy fried noodles. 

OK, it's probably not exclusively an Australian dish, but it's deeply embedded in our culture.

These are an Aussie take on the classic Chinese dumpling. They're stuffed with meat (usually pork) and veggies, then deep fried or steamed. Dimmies, as we call them, are mostly sold at fish 'n' chip shops and service stations. 

Chiko rolls

These are kind of like a dim sim's longer cousin. A Chiko roll is filled with cabbage, barley, beef, celery, carrot and onion, wrapped in a thick pastry and deep-fried. They're designed to be the perfect, easy-to-eat snack at a footy game. 

Anzac biscuits

These biscuits (NOT COOKIES) are sweet and crumbly, made with oats, golden syrup, butter and coconut. They became popular during World War I when women would send the biscuits to men away on the front lines, because they keep fresh for weeks. 

Blue heaven

Ok this is more of a ~flavour~ than a food, only really found in milkshakes and ice cream. It's bright blue and tastes like a mix between raspberry and vanilla. 

Neenish tart

An Aussie bakery classic, this so-sweet-it-hurts-your-teeth treat is a simple pastry filled with sweet gelatin-set cream and covered in thick strawberry and chocolate icing. It's the kind of thing you begged your mum to buy when you were eight.

The humble HSP is available at nearly every kebab shop in Australia, favoured by the late-night crowd who've already indulged in a lot of drinks. It's kebab meat spread over hot chips, covered in a variety of different sauces –  usually chilli, garlic, and barbecue.
