19 Photos That'll Piss You Off If You Care About Marine Life

Just in time for World Oceans Day.

    1. Let's all agree on one thing: We use way too much fucking plastic.

    2. And when you throw that plastic away, it doesn't just disappear.

    3. "But I recycle!" Well, 91% of the world's plastic doesn't get recycled.

    4. A lot of it ends up in our waterways, which eventually makes its way to the ocean.

    5. There's no nice way to say it: our plastic use is killing wildlife.

    6. Last week, a whale died after swallowing 80 plastic bags.

    7. Thirty percent of sea turtles have plastics in their stomach.

    8. And 50% of marine animals who ingest plastic will die from it.

    9. Seriously, if we keep going at the rate we are, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

    10. Back in 2014, there were estimated to be 5250 billion pieces of plastic in the ocean. AND THAT WAS FOUR YEARS AGO.

    11. Did you know there's a literal FLOATING TRASH ISLAND in the middle of the ocean, three times the size of France?

A lot of it comes from fishing nets, and some from the Japanese tsunami in 2011. But a good chunk of it is garbage that we've thrown down the drains.

    12. The equivalent of a garbage truck's worth of trash is dumped into the ocean EVERY MINUTE.

    13. Maybe one plastic bottle or one coffee cup won't make a difference, but when seven billion people say that exact thing, it doesn't really work.

    14. Even animals living 11 km beneath the surface have had plastic particles found in their stomach.

    15. If we all start pledging to use a little less plastic, it will actually have a difference.

    16. There are heaps of easy and realistic ways to live a life with less trash.

    17. You don't have to suddenly become an eco warrior who refuses to let plastic into their house, but begin by integrating small changes into your everyday life.

    18. And hopefully by next year's World Oceans Day, we'll see way less of this.

    19. And more of this. ❤️
