33 Things That'll Help You Redefine Your Relationship With Your Skin

Tools and treatments that are perfect if you have commitment issues...with your skin.

    1. Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant improves the texture of flaky skin with a brightening formula of salicylic acid and soothing green tea, which deep dive into pores to unclog dirt and debris. *Hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and dead skin have all left the chat.*

Reviewer's before and after showing the exfoliant dramatically reduced hyperpigmentation on their cheek and made the skin smoother
Reviewer showing the effects of the exfoliant on their hyperpigmentation

If you're new to chemical exfoliants, greetings! You'll definitely want to start off by applying this one or two times a week to take note of your skin's response. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA, also known as salicylic acid) mimics the natural exfoliation process of younger skin by shedding extra layers while *also* unclogging and clearing pores.

Promising review: "Best exfoliant out there! Ditch the scrubs and start using a chemical exfoliant. I just revamped my entire skin care routine and added Paula's Choice exfoliant to it. I have extremely sensitive and dry skin and often struggle to find skin care products that are effective. When used correctly, this exfoliant helps to rid my skin of the ungodly White Walker looking sheets of skin that fall off my face without being too harsh on my skin. Plus I swear I have noticed fewer blackheads on my face!" —Tray and Celia Henderson

Get it from Amazon for $11+ (available in two sizes).

    2. Tonymoly Tako Pore Blackhead Scrub Stick comes in the form of a too-cute-for-words octopus-shaped stick that is ridiculously good at removing excess sebum. Rub this over your face post-cleanse and just watch it work wonders on exfoliating your pores to yank out blackheads and whiteheads.

Promising review: "My 6-year-old daughter has keratosis pilaris, commonly known as 'chicken skin.' This year it really flared up during warm weather so I gave this wash along with lotion a try. BuzzFeed Shopping editor Daniel Boan (seen using this iconic treatment above) had this to say about his experience: "This is my first ever "TikTok made me buy it" purchase...and I've been hooked ever since. I've been hearing about the wonders of alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids for a while now (they're chemical exfoliants, meaning they help dissolve and loosen dead skin cells instead of sloughing them off like a physical exfoliant), but never quite knew where to start. When I saw this taking over TikTok, I decided to give it a try.

I started off by applying a thin layer of the blood-red product to my face and braced myself for a slight tingling sensation, though it went away after about 30 seconds. Then I let it sit for eight minutes (Don't go longer than 10 minutes! This is potent stuff!), rinsed it off, and was ah-mazed by how instantly bright and smooth my skin looked afterward. It's now become a weekly treatment for me and will always have a permanent spot in my skincare routine."

Your face will love you back! The retinol cream has definitely reduced my fine lines and wrinkles while also helping control my blemishes, reducing old acne scars, decreasing dark spots and under eye dark circles. I love the fact that its ingredients are all natural! It has a very pleasant smell and goes on light while nourishing your skin and doing all the things it is suppose to do! This stuff removes impurities without disrupting the protective barrier of your skin, plus it ~feeds~ it the moisture it needs on a daily basis.

Promising review: "So many reviews about this being 'too hydrating' or not removing makeup...it’s a hydrating cleanser! It’s not a makeup remover. There is literally nothing on the bottle that says it removes makeup. And if it’s too hydrating for you, it’s probably because you DON'T HAVE DRY SKIN TO BEGIN WITH. You gotta know what YOUR skin needs. A person with oily skin shouldn’t use products made for people with dry skin and vice versa. This cleanser is fantastic for me, but that’s because I have dry skin. I find that it cleans just as well as any other cleanser. The consistency is like thin lotion, which takes some getting used to but my skin loves it. I follow up with an alcohol-free toner and lightweight hyaluronic acid moisturizer. My skin is so happy. I haven’t had a single breakout since I started using it and my eczema cleared up. Definitely recommend." —Dayna

I had just recently moved from NYC to LA and the change in temperature has been really affecting my skin; it’s been red, puffy, and frequent breakouts occur. Day one of using this product: I started off my cleansing my face at night, then used the Sdara Derma Roller (which left my skin with a tingly, though not at all painful, sensation), and finally applied my moisturizers and serums that I could literally feel were being soaked into my pores. The next day, my skin had totally changed! After ONE use! I plan to use it once a week and highly recommend this gem to everyone." —melbd

It ravaged the lower right side of my face and I was pretty sure it was going to leave hideous scarring. I bought this and started applying it when I started scabbing and still haven't stopped using it until now. I had my shingles in April and it's August now. It works. Scars are now gone." —twitch

I am an avid user of this stuff whenever my under-eye area is feeling a little ~fragile~. The weather stresses me out for many reasons, but especially because of the toll is takes on my sensitive skin. So, I have to be *super* careful with what topical products I apply around my peepers since that area gets aggravated very easily. This cream cools, soothes, and relieves my eczema-like dryness that only rears its head during the cold- and dry-weather months. This is also fragrance-free and contains hyaluronic acid — so you already know that it's hydrating as heck.

Promising review: "This stuff is amazing!!!! I highly recommend this product to anyone suffering from dry scaly skin. There was a noticeable difference in the clearness of my skin within the first week of use! I like to wipe my makeup off with a microfiber cloth first, then wash my face with this cleanser to get off the first layer of makeup and gunk. BuzzFeed Shopping wrtier Ali Faccenda (seen above) loves this duo and tell us: "I've wanted to try these products out (thank you, TikTok) for a while now and let me say they are the KEY to an at-home pamper sesh. The steamer is so amazing not only for my skin but for helping release my clogged sinuses, which I get migraines from (so this is a heavenly product). The steamer has a few different settings — a cold setting and a hot setting — and I think I'm truly obsessed with the hot setting. This is perfect to do before using the wand so that your pores are open and ready to have all the impurities extracted from the skin. The wand definitely worked, I have a few white heads and pores extracted (def not as much as I anticipated) but honestly it was oddly satisfying to do. Would highly recommend this set if you're in need of some skin R&R."

    22. PanOxyl Foaming Face Wash works as both a cleanser to fight present and future breakouts with its 10% benzoyl peroxide formula *and* as a spot treatment (ideal for sensitive skin folk). It powerfully kills off bacteria to prevent new skin bullies from appearing, and deals with those that are currently on the surface by unclogging pores and helping skin shed more effectively.

    Jasmin Sandal/BuzzFeed, www.amazon.com

I have super-sensitive, temperamental skin, so using a maximum strength benzoyl peroxide as an all-over face wash would just not work for me. HOWEVER, after tapping through some stories and scrolling through some reviews, I discovered that many of those who suffer from bad breakouts, like myself, were using it as a spot treatment. And hey! I gotta say these folks were onto something. I gave this a whirl for a couple of months — used it in conjunction with a mild, all-over facial cleanser — and strictly dotted this on painful, under-the-skin pimples post-cleanse. After applying it each night and allowing it to sit on my skin for no more than two minutes, I noticed a significant decrease in the size of these boulder-like breakouts come the next morning. (If I saw any irritation or dryness, I'd skip a night.) Now, I use this to help clear my skin anytime I feel one of those bullies trying to punch their way through — and, TBH, it really helps to keep things under control!

(Just don't forget to thoroughly moisturize after each use!)

Promising review: "This product is by far the best solution if you struggle with acne. I have tried millions of cleaners, creams, masks you name it I’ve tried it and nothing works as good as PanOxyl. I currently use the 10% and have since the beginning; I have heard some people experience dryness, however, that has never happened with me. I swear by this product and it definitely does not get the hype it should. After one week my face was completely free of breakouts! This product uses benzoyl peroxide instead of other typical acne treatments, like salicylic acid which only removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores. This product works by or penetrating deep with the pores killing the bacteria that causes acne! So while it’s clearing your breakouts it’s preventing new ones from starting. That being said this product does contain peroxide so it will stain any towels or clothing it comes in contact with!" —Carolyn

    23. Elizabeth Mott Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer laughs in the face of oily lids and creases, since its paraben-free formula features a sebum-controlling powder that locks in eyeshadow and liner. I’ve been searching for something to help take the dead skin off for ages because every time I lotion up after showering, no matter what kind of body scrub or loofah I use, I always get gross skin. I had been meaning to give this a whirl since its release a few years ago, and, boy, I don't know why I waited so long to snag it because this stuff has changed the game. I recently moved from New York to California and, let me tell you, with this change in climate, my skin has gone through every phase imaginable: Painfully flaky with patches of dryness, breakouts beyond belief, and shine, ooh, so much shine you'd think there had been an oil spill. (And I'm telling you all of this because no matter what I put on my face, makeup never sits on it quite like I want it to.)

Enter Wowder — the pillowy-soft powder that has done the unthinkable: blurred my imperfections and sets my concealer without leaving a chalky residue. Now anytime I catch my reflection in the mirror I literally have to double take. My skin appears smoother and any fine lines look so much softer. A little goes a long way — and now I can leave my house with a little more confidence and return with a look that hasn't wavered.

Oh! And it's vegan and cruelty-free.

    26. Mighty Patch hydrocolloid pimple patches work to absorb pus and shrink zits ~head on~. Since adult acne is a thing *sigh*, these are great to prevent picking and, according to one of our editors, are an effective treatment to avoid scarring and hyperpigmentation.

reviewer with a number of pimple patches placed on their cheek
same reviewer with pimple patches on their face and showing some of them filled with pus 7 to 8 hours later

Melanie Aman, an editor on our Shopping team, tried these out and says: "These are hands down the best pimple patches I’ve ever used. Why? Because they actually work. I’ve tried some more cutesy patches that were great for Instagram photos but did nothing to shrink my breakouts. And the pimple patches that touted themselves as basically invisible were — but so were any results. While the Hero Cosmetics pimple patches are a little more visible (but really only noticeable if someone was standing really close to my face), the results are clear to see. (And JSYK, they also make an invisible version, but I have not tried it.)

IMO they work best on whiteheads, drawing out the pus and preventing me from picking. Once all the fluids are drained (yum!), I plop a patch on what was once home to a very angry whitehead and replace it twice a day (once in the morning and once at night). In my experience, that has been the best treatment for preventing really noticeable hyperpigmentation and acne scarring, which my skin is really prone to after breakouts."

As it's summertime I spend a lot of time in bikinis with my bottom showing, and I just felt like a hydration recharge and a little life added back into my skin. I took a shower and when I got out, I put the mask on and left it on longer than the recommended amount of time. I felt the end result visibly made my skin look hydrated as well as smooth. Not only that but I felt the next morning I could still visibly see the results, so I was extra happy in my bikini that day. I know everyone's skin and shape is different so results will always vary but I can definitely say this booty mask is no gimmick, and extra kudos to this company for making a booty mask that covers big booties! Also side note: The packaging is adorable." —CC

I love me a toner and have been meaning to try out a spray-on formula for a while, so when I had to opportunity to test this out I was ecstatic. I used to only use this at night post-cleanse to spritz all over my face and rid my skin of any leftover makeup and impurities, but now I've incorporated it into my morning routine as well as a sort of ~alarm clock~ for my face. I instantly feel it getting to work with a mild, skin-healing formula that also makes my skin feel super-duper clean and awake. I personally love the smell of this, too (hello, cucumber and green tea!), and it leaves my face feeling soothed and refreshed, ready for a dollop of moisturizer.

Promising review: "I started with No B.S. back in February and I bought the cleanser, toner, C&E serum, hyaluronic cream, and SPF moisturizer. This is my favorite product of them all, and the one I refuse to run out of. My skin feels so clean and tight after using it, and the smell is so subtle and nice. You get a ton of toner in the bottle. If you're only going to buy one product, this is it." —Hannah

This is the best my skin has ever looked. I lather it on generously every night, and again in the morning. The oil does have an orange color, but once it is absorbed into the skin, you can't notice." —Alyssa

This 100% natural calcium bentonite clay is ideal for facials, body wraps, clay baths, foot soaks, hair masks, and even insect bites!

Promising review: "I bought this as a last hope for cystic acne. I bought a brand of raw apple cider vinegar with the mother to mix with the clay powder because I heard that worked best for people experiencing skin problems. My skin has been a rollercoaster for the past five years. But recently, things have gotten really out of control. This mask had been such a lifesaver. I'm not sure words can describe how impressed I am with this healing clay mask. Since my skin has been through hell and I've literally tried everything, it's pretty resilient so I've been using this mask every night for the last four days. It's not nearly as drying as I thought it would be so that hasn't been an issue. But the mask has dried up everything and I have no new breakouts. I was so happy that I cried. If I could give this product a million stars, I would!" —Afton StAmour

    32. Remix Re:Wand Tool stimulates circulation and blood flow to reinvigorate drowsy-looking skin and give your face a *relaxing* workout. If you're into gua sha, I guarantee you won't be able to get through a brunch without discussing the benefits of your skin's new BFF.

Ok, people, sound the alarms: I am officially a gua sha convert. The idea behind it is that by using a tool to apply a light pressure to your skin, you may help improve circulation, relieve tension, and encourage lymphatic drainage (aka up your blood flow and improve the look of your complexion — who wouldn't want that?!). So when I was sent this hand-carved beauty, I thought it would be the perfect opp to test out this practice and *finally* level up my skincare routine. And this, my friends, is IT. This tool comes in a sculpted shape that works with the natural curves of your face (see: under eyes, jawline, cheekbones), has multiple ways that it can be used (think: gua sha, reflexology, and acupressure) and just feels amazing as it glides over the skin. I like to keep this crystal-based tool in the fridge for about 20 minutes before I use it in conjunction with a vitamin C serum every morning. Not only have I seen a difference in the appearance of fine lines and puffiness around my eyes and cheeks, but I love being able to carve out a few minutes each day to treat myself to some quiet "me" time. This works in my serums and creams, leaves my face with a refreshed, dewy glow, and preps my skin for makeup application, or, even better, a makeup-free day!

Promising reviews: "Swear by this stuff for sensitive skin. I have sensitive skin due to rosacea and skin allergies. My dermatologist recommended Vanicream Lite Lotion for my face. It was ok but then I discovered this stuff — the moisturizing cream in the pump. The Vanicream Moisturizing cream is fantastic — my rosacea is so much better since switching to this stuff. It keeps my sensitive skin happy and protected. I even use it during the summer months with no problems. Vanicream made a fantastic product!" —S

"Finally a moisturizer that doesn’t burn sting or irritate my skin. I’ve had supersensitive skin all my life especially on my face and I am 46 years old. I have finally found the one lotion that doesn’t irritate my face. I am day two into using the cleanser and the moisturizer and you have no idea how great it is for my face not to burn and turn bright red just fantastic!!!! The moisturizer is a bit thick so you don’t need a lot; even though it’s a little higher priced it’ll last forever and it’s worth it when you have supersensitive skin. FAN FOR LIFE!!!" —Alisa Griffey
