From the first of April this year, migrant workers from outside the EU will be required to earn a salary of £35,000 in order to remain in the UK after five years.
This new threshold, part of a set of changes implemented by Home Secretary Theresa May in 2012, is being debated for the first time Monday afternoon in Westminster Hall.
Opponents of the change have pointed out that many teachers and NHS staff would fail to meet the new salary requirement and could face deportation.
