Here Are 14 Shows That Got Cancelled Way Too Soon, And I Think They Deserve To Come Back

In a parallel universe, all of these shows got the send off they deserve.

Look, I get it. Not every show can continue forever and ever, but sometimes they get cut way too short!

I've rounded up shows that were cancelled abruptly, and I wish they had another season coming in the future...

1. Pushing Daisies

ABC

If you haven't seen the show, it's essentially a pastry chef who has the power to bring dead people back to life with just his touch. He uses this power to bring his childhood crush, Chuck, back to life, but of course is unable to touch her again or she'll die. I vividly remember Ned and Chuck kissing through cling film, and it has stayed with me ever since. Although the show received 12 Emmy nominations, it was unfortunately cancelled after its second season due to the 2007-08 writers' strikes.

2. The Society

Netflix

The show follows a group of teenagers who return from a school trip and find that everyone else in their town has suddenly disappeared. They're completely cut off from the regular world, and have to figure out how to survive. This was a great first season, and had SO much potential! Sadly, Netflix chose to cancel it due to COVID circumstances.

3. Insatiable

It's a dark comedy that focuses on teenager Patty who has spent years being bullied for her weight. She suddenly finds herself "thin" after being in hospital and is on the hunt for payback to anyone who did her wrong. After two seasons, Alyssa Milano (actress on the show) confirmed it won't be returning for a third season via X. There was never a solid reason as to why, but it could be the case that viewing figures weren't high enough.

4. Good Girls

NBC

Alright, I'll admit, this one still hurts. The show follows the lives of three suburban mums who resort to a life of crime after getting involved with the wrong people. After four seasons, fans were eagerly awaiting the announcement for season five, but that never came. Unfortunately, although the season had already been written, allegedly there was a strained relationship between two cast members meaning they just couldn't make it work. Boo!

5. Santa Clarita Diet

Netflix

A couple (who are also real estate agents) face a whole new set of obstacles once Sheila becomes "undead" and starts to have a craving for human flesh. It lasted three seasons before Netflix decided to pull the plug, which was essentially because they didn't have a viable reason to pump any more money into the show. Of course, this upset fans, especially because it ended on a cliff hanger!

6. Don’t Trust The B**** In Apt 23

ABC

This sitcom follows June, a woman who has just landed her dream job and moves to the big city. This is all before she finds out there isn't actually a job, and her boyfriend has been cheating on her. She's then forced to move in with Chloe, the "b****" in apartment 23. It was cancelled after two seasons because sadly enough people weren't watching it. Personally, I would do anything for it to come back for a final season.

7. Hannibal

NBC

FBI profiler Will is hired to investigate a serial killer, and with the weight of the investigation Will is sent to see forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Of course, I won't give too much away, but it gets *messy*. I loved this series, but sadly due to low viewership it got taken away from our screens after three seasons.

8. Freaks and Geeks

NBC

To summarise, it's basically two groups, "the freaks" and "the geeks" navigating their way through the ups and downs of high school life. There were a few reasons as to why this show was cancelled after only one season, the first being that it had an erratic episode schedule, meaning the episodes were shown at odd times and some even had a three week gap between them. Lastly, although a beloved classic now, it just didn't do very well ratings wise when it first came out.

9. American Gods

Starz

Lead character, Shadow, finds himself under the employment of a mysterious man called Mr. Wednesday and is caught up in a large-scale conflict between the Old and New Gods after being released from prison. Unfortunately, after three seasons the show's network cut ties with it due to low viewership which was a controversial decision to fans as it ended on a cliff hanger.

10. Gossip Girl (2021)

HBO Max

This is technically a sequel to the original (and iconic) Gossip Girl and follows a new generation of teenagers facing the wrath of their every move being watched. After two seasons, it was announced that there would be no third season. Showrunner Josh Safran said that although the series couldn't continue on HBO Max, they are "currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs." Fingers crossed it returns!

11. Anne with an E

CBC Television / Netflix

This story is about an orphaned girl, Anne, who after enduring an abusive home life is attempting to find her place in the world. After three seasons, the showrunners announced it wasn't coming back for a fourth. This received a lot of online criticism, with X users getting "#RenewAnneWithAnE" trending. No official reason for the cancellation has been given, but there are rumours that it was due to a disintegrating relationship between CBC and Netflix.

12. Arrested Development

Fox / Netflix

It's about the Bluth's, a formerly wealthy but dysfunctional family who run a housing development company. It starts with Michael trying to save his family business after his father is imprisoned. After three seasons, Fox cancelled the show before Netflix decided to pick it up again for a revival in 2013. It was first cancelled due to viewership dropping after each season, and although the revival proved quite popular it doesn't seem to be returning for a final season, with many saying it simply ran its course.

13. Firefly

Fox

Based five hundred years into the future, the show follows a crew aboard a spacecraft who are trying to survive travelling through unknown parts of the galaxy and escaping those out to get them. Although it now has a loyal fanbase, the show only aired 14 episodes before getting cancelled due to low viewership. If you're a fan of The Big Bang Theory, you may remember this was one of Sheldon's favourite shows that he wished would make its return!

14. Happy Endings

ABC

This Chicago sitcom is based around a group of friends trying to navigate their way through adulthood. If you're a Friends fan, then this is definitely your cup of tea! Unfortunately, it was cancelled after three seasons due to ABC's erratic scheduling which caused low ratings. It's definitely a comfort watch, and if they announced its revival today I would be ecstatic!
