JoJo Opened Up About Rerecording Her Masters And How Taylor Swift Supported Her Through Her Record Label Lawsuit

"She couldn't have ever known that she would go through something similar."

You already know JoJo, the vocal legend behind '00s bops like "Leave (Get Out)" and "Baby It's You".

She just released her brand new album, Good to Know, but while she's thriving now, JoJo's career has had some serious difficulties. In fact, it all came to a standstill in 2009, when she sued her former record label Da Family Records over the terms of her contract.

JoJo signed a seven-album deal when she was just 12 years old, but after releasing her second album in 2006, the label refused to release anything new.

"I released these new masters of my first two albums because I was tired of seeing people being like, 'Why did you take your albums down from Spotify?'" JoJo said in a new interview with People.

And JoJo also opened up about the support she received during her lawsuit from fellow pop legend Taylor Swift, who unknowingly would go through something similar just a few years later.

    She said:

A few years ago, Taylor had me over her house, actually. She was just like, "I can't believe everything you're going through. This is so fucked up, so wrong." And of course, she couldn't have ever known that she would go through something similar where her catalog was bought from her.

Last year, Taylor's old record label Big Machine was acquired by Scooter Braun's company — and, along with it, all the master recordings of her first six albums.

She quickly announced plans to rerecord her masters as soon as she is legally able to, and JoJo spoke out in support of Taylor at the time.

"I sympathise with her plight, so whatever she decides to do, I think she should do," JoJo told Vulture in November. "She has an amazing fan base, and yeah, it’s unfortunate, it sucks, so I understand. But she doesn’t need my advice."

But, speaking to People, JoJo was clear that she believes their situations to be very different, saying she doesn't think Taylor's career is suffering as a result of her own record label drama.

    She said:

Taylor is in a different position in her career. I was really sidelined, and it was pretty hurtful. I don't think that her career is suffering because of whatever happened ... I'm on the side of these women. But, at the end of the day, the situation between her and Scooter is vastly different than what I was going through with Blackground.

"I don't have any problem with Scooter Braun. I think he's a really smart man," she concluded. "But it does suck to feel like you are not in control of your own shit."
