Billie Eilish Just Clarified Why She Wears Baggy Clothes, And It's Not About Being Sexualised

"[The] positive [comments] about how I dress have this slut-shaming element."

I know you know who Billie Eilish is. The 17-year-old has been everywhere since she released her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, in March, and just yesterday she became the first artist born this century to get to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

She's also a whole style icon at this point.

And Eilish has spoken at length about her style, explaining why she prefers to wear clothes that are — in her own words — "800 sizes bigger" than she is.

In an interview with Vogue Australia in June, Eilish said her clothing gives her the opportunity to keep part of herself a "mystery" from the public.

But during a conversation with Pharrell Williams for the September issue of V magazine, Eilish said her comments on the subject have been misconstrued.

She explained that she never intended her personal style to become part of a conversation about slut-shaming or women expressing their femininity.

"It’s more, just, I wear what I want to wear," she said. "But of course, everyone sees it as, 'She’s saying no to being sexualized' and 'She’s saying no to being the stereotypical female'."

"[The] positive [comments] about how I dress have this slut-shaming element," Eilish went on. "Like, 'I am so glad that you are dressing like a boy so that other girls can dress like boys, so that they aren’t sluts'."

Eilish continued to say she supports people — both women and men — feeling comfortable enough in their own body "to show just whatever they want".

"I don’t like that there’s this weird new world of supporting me by shaming people that [may not] want to [dress like me]," she concluded.
