If You Haven’t Updated Your Home Decor Since College, Here Are 27 Basics To Get You Started

It is with deep regret that I inform you it's time to retire that tapestry you've had since your freshman year. So sorry.

    1. A set of NoNo Brackets in case you have outdated vertical blinds, reminiscent of your dorm room (which brings flashbacks of paper-writing all-nighters) and would like to cover them up with a pretty curtain. And believe me, I know the exact reason why you haven't gotten around to it. The drilling..? Taking out a level...? It's all very, very daunting, but luckily you can cut out the need for any nails, drills, and hammers by popping these directly onto your current curtain rod for the easiest setup possible.

Promising review: "This bracket is awesome and was extremely easy to install. We were able to hang curtains over our vertical blinds in just a few minutes and didn't even need any tools. Great product!!!" —Amazon Customer

Get a set of two from Amazon for $14.95.

    2. A set of surprisingly glamourous velvet slipcovers for anyone whose couch has been through the ringer. How do you even begin to clean a couch? Don't think about it, just throw these on and pretend like nothing happened.

Promising review: "I could not believe the cover in the plastic bag would fit my huge couch but I pushed ahead. The stretch is unbelievable. Then the frosting was IT IS VELVET. Plush, soft, and holds tight. The downside for me is I wish I had purchased a light blue rather than teal." —Liz

Get it from Amazon for $35.49+ (available in five sizes and 10 colors).

    3. A roll of exposed brick peel-and-stick wallpaper to create an accent wall that looks straight out of an NYC loft apartment (minus the outrageous rent and tiny living space).

    4. A cast-iron plant because greenery has the potential to really liven up your space and considering that this plant is nearly impossible to kill, it should stay lively.

    5. A strip of stick-on color-changing LED lights that'll bring a completely different (and cooler) vibe to your apartment. Your flush-mount light could simply never.

    6. A bamboo beaded curtain that'll add some dimension to your space, act as a room divider in a studio, or just fill an empty entryway. One thing's for sure — with this, your home will officially be referred to as "the fun house" by all your guests.

    7. A compact kitchen set so you can start your mornings off the right way (sitting down and eating breakfast instead of shoveling cereal into your mouth as you stand over the sink).

    8. A lift-top table in case you're living in a small studio and can't have both a desk and coffee table. This just in — you no longer have to choose — oh, and you'll get some extra storage space too.

    9. A set of ceramic coasters because you're an adult now and adults use these. Plus, as the ~proud owner~ of your new coffee table, you're going to have hawk eyes on every glass in its vicinity.

    10. A set of peel-and-stick tiles for your kitchen backsplash, bathroom wall, laundry room — you name it. However you decide to use them, a few things are certain: You won't need to break out the sledgehammer, you won't need to call a contractor, and you will not need to cry over pictures of your dream kitchen on Pinterest any longer.

    11. A leaning floor mirror to brighten up a dark corner and add the illusion of more space if your room happens to be on the smaller side. Also — #OOTD pics, hellooo. 👋

    12. A tufted ottoman because not all of us have room in our home for sectionals...but we still deserve to kick our feet up on a nice cushy surface.

    13. A macrame tapestry because I know — it's tough to be part entirely with the beloved tapestry trend. Just think of this as an elegant, *more adult* upgrade.

    14. A gallery wall frame set in case you wanna take care of your blank wall and forgo the tapestry all together. A wall dedicated to your favorite art prints and photos of you and your loved ones will really make your house feel like home.

    15. A tufted accent recliner to help you kick your feet up after a long day of work...and keep those feet up until it's time for bed. I mean, it does recline so, you could just sleep on it, eliminating the need for you to get up altogether. Guess it all depends on just how long and how hard that particular day of work was.

    16. A set of floating shelves that'll not only jazz up your empty walls but also give you the perfect spot to incorporate sentimental little knickknacks into your decor, without making your space messier or more cluttered.

    17. An industrial floor lamp for some soft lighting, that'll instantly cozy up the ambience of your domicile. After all, your home is your safe haven and it's hard to feel at peace with harsh overhead lighting.

    18. A faux-fur throw pillow that'll add some texture and a pop of color to your otherwise boring couch. Plus, it is basically the acceptable, adult version of a stuffed animal you can snuggle as an adult, without getting any funny looks.

    19. A fuzzy throw blanket so you don't have to drag your comforter from your bed into the living room every time you wanna snuggle up on the couch.

    20. A hanging disco ball planter that brings a lil' bit of party into the equation. And while you (most likely) can't hang like you used to, this planter is so fun, it may just top the ol' college glory days of your youth.

    21. A flower bath mat that's a way better option than the crumpled-up towel on the floor you've been stepping on. It's way cuter too.

Green, pink and purple flower bath mats

    22. A luxuriously soft shag duvet cover because you needed yet another excuse to never leave your bed. See how comfy this looks? That should do it.

    23. A floor pillow in case you're short on seating for guests or in case you're like me and genuinely love sitting on the floor. 🚨Attention my fellow floor people 🚨 — we're about to level up.

    24. Tufted wall art depicting Michelangelo's Creation of Adam because breaking up your wall with a 3D piece here and there will make your room way cooler than anyone else's. Trust me, this is going to have all your friends saying "Ooo, where did you get that?!"

    25. A large woven basket to throw blankets, magazines, and any other miscellaneous items in — eliminating unnecessary clutter, without putting any actual effort into organizing and of course, without jeopardizing your overall aesthetic. Plastic storage bins are so not chic.

    26. A tree bookshelf so my bookworms (who are equally as passionate about home decor as they are about reading) have a designated place for all their precious novels that also acts as a visually-appealing and unique decorative piece.

    27. And a simple ceramic vase that'll encourage you to buy yourself flowers. Shout out to Miley, I'm sure she'd approve of this purchase.
