That Kylo Ren Shirtless Scene Wasn't As Random As You Think

They had their reasons.

So, minor spoiler: Kylo Ren aka Adam Driver is shirtless in The Last Jedi.

I need to see more shirtless kylo in IX, JJ! 😂😍 #reylo #rey #kyloren

And people kinda flipped out about it.

I heard there's a shirtless Kylo Ren scene in #TheLastJedi. I guess Matt was right

BUT (and here's where some actual spoilers come in), it turns out that this choice wasn't just for "no reason"!

(No spoilers I swear) Best scene from #LastJedi was when kylo ren was shirtless for no reason, was asked to put on… https://t.co/XSozUN80fj

One of the co-sound supervisors for The Last Jedi, Ren Klyce (yes, in an excellent bit of serendipity, his name is Ren), explained the decision to HuffPo:

The way in which [director Rian Johnson] decided to create the Force connection by just simply doing vertical cuts without using any CG ... it’s pure simplicity in terms of filmmaking with visual cuts. We cut to her side; we cut to Kylo Ren; we cut to her; and back and forth. That was important to establish what she was actually seeing. Was she hearing his voice or seeing his face or just his eyes? And so that [shirtless scene] is to inform the audience, "Oh, she can see his body."

TL;DR: Kylo was shirtless so that we, the audience, could understand just how much of him Rey was seeing during their Force FaceTime.

So there you go. It wasn't ALL just eye candy.
